The sex scenes in BioWare's upcoming next-generation role-playing game Dragon Age: Inquisition will take inspiration from Mass Effect and be "mature and tasteful," according to cinematic director Jonathan Perry.
"I think Mass Effect’s scenes were done really well and I think we will take Inquisition’s scenes in that direction," Perry told GamerZines. "You might have a nude character but they are framed in such a way that parts of them are in shadow, or having characters in various states of undress."
"We also want to focus not just on the sex itself, but also that this is the culmination of spending a lot of time with a character and getting to know them, and so we’re giving scenes a mature and tasteful treatment I guess," he added. "We’ll see where it goes for Dragon Age: Inquisition; it’s something that we’re working on right now so we’ll see how these scenes pan out."
Asked if video games could match film in their ability to portray a scene of intimacy, Perry said it is "inevitable" that games will be able to do this some day, when they can cross the "uncanny valley." Ultimately though, the interactive nature of games will always separate them from films, Perry said.
"But I think that games can be powerful in a very different way because they are interactive and they are based on your choices," Perry said. "They can react to what you’re doing and that’s something you don’t get in film as you are a passive viewer."
glad to see bioware's priorities are in order

Well, at least they're taking cues from the first Mass Effect which actually was fairly tasteful, but seriously why make such a big deal about this when promoting the game?
Good romances aren't going to win back the fans they lost with Dragon Age II; a good story and gameplay will. They should be focusing on that instead.
this is the news i've been waiting for
Maybe they should actually write good romances first

Never.
Shitty novella romance is a staple of Bioware.
I miss dragon age origin every once and a while, it was such a beautiful game
Maybe they should actually write good romances first
Or they can keep the current cardboard romances and just toss out what attempts at subtlety they have, and just make the sex scenes be full-out porn.
Get the guys doing SFM porn to animate the scenes.
Chances are they'd end up with the highest-quality animations in the whole game. :v:

I'll be happy if they can get back to writing a decent main plot again.
But i dont like my sex scenes to be mature and tasteful.
Honestly, I don't see how sex can be 'tasteful' when you're heaving, toned warriors who fight for days on end without pooping, sleeping, peeing, or showering.
Video game semantics are nasty as shit.

They poop and piss on dead darkspawn and then shower in their blood when you aren't looking, ergo why your character always seems to be drenched in blood whilst in dialouge scenes
Sleep is only implied in the romance scenes; which is why they are so crucial.
BioWare sucks at this shit. All their sexy time scenes have been total fucking garbage. All of them. I have no hope at all.
BioWare should make the game fun first because god knows they haven't done that in a while.

I dunno, Mass Effect 3 had a crummy story, but it was fun to play.

And DA:I's combat looks promising so far. Less tactical sadly, but still very entertaining.

I admire your ridiculously impenetrable optimism but when they say delaying the game a year allowed them to make custom pc models for three races that were already in the game and otherwise that would have been impossible, and they literally invalidate the entirety of the origins main quest in the teaser trailer, I have to question pretty much everything about this game.
Bioware honestly looks like they're teetering into Capcom territory at a slightly slower pace than capcom did.

That will never happen as long as Mac Walters stays with the company as a Lead Writer.
The problem with Bioware's sex scenes is that they're like fucking jump scares. They sneak up on you for no reason and with no warning. It is actually possible to accidentally have sex in a Bioware game.
Liara: I like space and stuff
Me: Yeah space is pretty cool
Liara: do you like aliens
Me: Yeah aliens are pretty awesome
*sex*
Me: wait, what? HELLO?

What game has good romance?
it looks better than dragon age ii so i'm happy. the graphics seem gorgeous and the combat seems a little bit more expansive than daii so this could be good. granted, i didn't think daii was bad, per se, only mediocre but rather disappointing compared to the first one.

That happened to me in Mass Effect 1. I was just trying to be Ashley's friend, but the game thought I was in a romance with her. Pretty jarring to have her appear and want to confess her feelings to me when all I wanted to be was her friend.
the problem with bioware's storylines seem to be that they cant decide between being deep and thought-provoking or being entertaining.
this was never a problem for black isle games because they trusted themselves and their audience that their storylines can be deep and provoking while appealing to their audience at the same time.
bioware on the other hand now seems to think that their audience is stupid and can't tolerate anything beyond the most simplistic and obvious things imaginable. mass effect 2 and 3 seemed almost condescending to me.

I am indeed optimistic but you'll note I didn't say they actually have a good story for DAIII :v:
I'm hoping it turns out well but I won't be particularly surprised if it doesn't.
I remember I modded my DA game to have nude models, but I didn't know that the dudes would have these massive boners. So in Ostagar there's that prisoner in a cage begging for food, but the mod replaced underwear with nudity, so the whole time I'm talking to him my character is eye-level with a erect penis a foot from his face.

To be honest, this seems like a general problem in the games industry right now, not just with Bioware.
that's true, but its particularly sad with bioware because they used to make some terrific RPGs.
I'd prefer it if they were to not add a sex scene at all. If I wanted to watch sex, I would watch porn or some romantic movie, but if I'm playing a video game, I'm there to play and not watch something like that.

Cracks me up, every time.
if a game has sex then it should deal with the consequences and the impact of sexuality. lots of game developers place sex and sexuality as wallpaper or extra edge to sell its M rating, which is totally unrealistic and vapid.
What usually bugs me about sex/romance in Bioware games is they use it in the place of further character development. In Mass Effect 2, this literally cut you off from any more interaction with a squad member if you didn't want in their pants. And if a romance was gender specific and you were the wrong one, you were locked out by default.
