Researchers believe they have identified why a mutation in a particular gene can lead to obesity.
Mouse experiments suggested the body's message to "stop eating" was blocked if the animals had the mutation.
The study, published in Nature Medicine, said the brain's response to appetite hormones was being disrupted.
The Georgetown University Medical Center researchers hope their findings could lead to new ways to control weight.
Many genes have been linked to obesity, one of them - brain-derived neurotrophic factor gene - has been shown to play a role in putting on weight in animal and some human studies.
However, scientists at the Georgetown University Medical Center said the explanation for this link was unknown.
In studies on mice which had been genetically modified to have the mutation, the mice consumed up to 80% more food than normal.
After a meal, hormones such as insulin and leptin should tell the brain that the body is full and should stop eating. The researchers showed that in the mutated mice the message was not being passed on from the hormones in the blood to the correct part of the brain.
One of the researchers Prof Baoji Xu said: "If there is a problem with the BDNF gene, neurons can't talk to each other, and the leptin and insulin signals are ineffective, and appetite is not modified."
He said the discovery "may open up novel strategies to help the brain control body weight" such as finding a "drug that can stimulate BDNF expression".
Prof Sadaf Farooqi, who studies the relationship between genes and obesity at the University of Cambridge, told the BBC: "Genes have a surprisingly large role, it's often underestimated. Between 40 and 70% of the difference in weight between two individuals is due to genetics."
She said completely disrupting the brain-derived neurotrophic factor gene had been shown to lead to severe obesity. However, she cautioned that the study was "entirely in mice" and the mutation was "very rare" in people.

So many breakthroughs so soon
Also, if this was put into a pill, it'd solve the people who "can't stop" eating food.

Problem is not eating food, it's not exercising enough to get rid of the fat.

I recall watching this video on this whale of a person, and he said that he kept eating and eating, even after he became unable to move. It'd stop eating over the 2500 GDA calories
ur mom has lods XDXDXDXDXD
Yo momma so fat, her BDNF gene ain't even working properly.
And now the fatasses too lazy to work their weight off and unwilling or unable to maintain the willpower needed to stay on a sensible diet will have a study to point to and misinterpret whenever criticized.
Quite interesting just the same.
Hopefully in the next few generations a revolutionary drug that blocks obesity will become available to the masses. Meanwhile, the world searches for a new american stereotype.

Ignorance will always be more of a stereotype (to me at least) than obesity here.

Don't worry, as long as you have the Republican party the stupid stereotype will still apply.
Problem is not eating food, it's not exercising enough to get rid of the fat.
Not really, no.
With a healthy diet you don't need much exercise to maintain your weight, I've been 120kg for months and I never exercise or even move around a lot. I stay the same because I don't stuff my face every 15 minutes. The problem is people who, for either psychological reasons, ignorance, genetic reasons or a combination of those have an unbalanced diet which results in obesity.
I wish I was a bit fatter, I'm cold a lot. My friend isn't fat but when I'm cold he isn't. It makes me feel unhealthy.

that's the same fucking thing
"the problem isn't eating more than you need, it's not needing more than you eat."

I eat tons dude, my metabolism is on crack.
I'm about to have a dinner of baked beans with bacon and a hot dog for dinner, and a cupcake for desert.
Every morning I have 2 eggs and 2 slices of toast. I have pizza for lunch every day, and my dinner varies.
I don't gain any weight.
Yo mama so fat she split her genes.
I have shit for metabolism, i'm always hungry, even after i ate a massive fucking meal.

I'm the exact same way. I abuse my metabolism so bad and eat a lot, and gain nothing but a pound.

Then don't try, if you can't change your weight no matter how you try. It probably means your body is how it's supposed to be.
I hope people will remember that this by no fucking mean that you shouldn't exercise or try to lose weight and just stay fat because OHH GENETICS LET ME EAT ALL THOSE FUCKING PIES.
I've been fat for the majority of my life, 265 lbs at 5'11 like 8 months ago, I never really ate that much but I always bloated up like a fat sack of shit, doesn't mean I couldn't start exercising and up to now I've lost over 45 lbs, fat faggots.

Cannabis users can't just stop right there because if they did they'd get sick as hell. Obese people are pretty much no different. As much as they'd like to stop, they can't. Getting over an addiction is insanely hard.
Once most of you stop growing you will need to exercise more or you're going to get fat really fast, just saying.
