The alert activates emergency shelters city-wide as well as the Assistance to Shelter Act, enabling police to direct homeless and other at-risk individuals to shelter facilities. A total of seven temporary shelters with nearly 250 beds and mats were slated to open their doors Saturday and Sunday nights. Although a temperature of -2 C is one of four criteria that can trigger an extreme weather alert, temperatures were expected to remain above freezing Sunday night, according to Environment Canada. The alert, issued Saturday morning, will remain in effect until cancelled. For a list of available temporary shelters, click here. (Don't actually click there) The extreme weather alert came on the heels of heightened anxiety about the availability of temporary shelter space for Vancouver’s homeless population. A reduction to 60 spaces earlier this year from a 2011 peak of 240 at the low-barrier First United Church shelter left the city’s homeless facing fewer temporary shelter beds. Meanwhile, the number of people living on the street doubled in 2012 compared with 2011. The city’s annual count of unsheltered homeless people — those with no physical shelter and sleeping on the street or in doorways, parkades, parks and beaches — increased to 306 in 2012 from 154 in 2011. The 24-hour count was carried out in March 2012. “Many people who had been living in the (First United) shelter were forced to leave. With limited low-barrier shelter space, many were unable to find a suitable alternative,” said Brittany Graham, program coordinator for the Eastside Illicit Drinkers Group for Education, an advocacy group started this year. “Many of those people affected by this are members of EIDGE. This past summer within two months, six members of EIDGE died. All of them had been impacted by the changes at First United,” Graham said in an email. She is worried about a lack of space at low-barrier shelters — filled each night on a first-come, first-served basis with few restrictions around access, pets or identification — will end up harming homeless people, particularly in the Downtown Eastside, as colder weather approaches.
**SOURCE** Here I was thinking Toronto went into overdrive when it got cold.
Wow. that car on the left looks really safe.
Isn't -2 C like 30 F? It was 24 F with a shitty wind in Massachusetts today and nobody cared.
I don't see how the image is related
-20c In Sweden the day before yesterday. Grow some snowballs.
Uhm, it's currently 24F (-3C) in Michigan and fine.
Wow! They should all try living in Winnipeg for one day in January and see who survives. It regularly gets to -30 C then.
What a bunch of pansies.
You guys are all such wimps it's way colder in X place where I live.
Wow! They should all try living in Winnipeg for one day in January and see who survives. Last time it I was there it was about -35 and it wasn't so bad. EDIT: oh, not saying -2 is bad though even here. Article is more than a bit sensationalist
I don't see how the image is related
Icy roads
That's still cold, but not extreme weather cold... I'd imagine this is probably just to warn people to be conscientious about hypothermia and frostbite and things like that.
I was just out in 19 degrees F the other night, that ain't so bad...Massachussetts baby.
Hell it drops below -2 in Houston every so often.
I was just out in 19 degrees F the other night, that ain't so bad...Massachussetts baby.
16f this afternoon, that's nothing...Illinois motherfucker.
oh no its going to get below freezing how is this news again
Any snow in southern BC causes problems, especially in Victoria with all the retired people driving. Up here in northern BC -3 is unusually warm for late December.
oh no its going to get below freezing how is this news again
Because the city of Vancouver are wusses?
Why is this news
I've never felt that Vancouver is particularly Canadian. Their weather is too mild, and I don't think they have a ton of French speakers to my knowledge.
And Vancouverites like to mock us Southern Ontarians for overreacting to a snowfall...
I've never felt that Vancouver is particularly Canadian. Their weather is too mild, and I don't think they have a ton of French speakers to my knowledge.
i've been there it's more like washington than canada
Holy hell, it's 50 F here in Florida, and I'm freezing.
I've never felt that Vancouver is particularly Canadian. That, and it's mandatory for all of us to learn french up until grade 8 anyway.
Isn't -2 C like 30 F? It was 24 F with a shitty wind in Massachusetts today and nobody cared.
Vancouver is right next to the warm (in comparison to the temperature) sea. When we do get snow, it's for 2-3 day and then it melts. [editline]30th December 2012[/editline]
I don't see how the image is related
When it snows everyone flips out and hundreds upon hundreds of accidents occur. [editline]30th December 2012[/editline] The accidents happen because no one can be assed to change their tires to winter tires.
I've never felt that Vancouver is particularly Canadian. Their weather is too mild, and I don't think they have a ton of French speakers to my knowledge.
When the big one hits and Richmond sinks under the waves, will it be any more Canadian? :v:
freezing rain is dangerous.
16f this afternoon, that's nothing...Illinois motherfucker.
-5 F this afternoon...that's nothing...Minnesota motherfucker.
In Scandinavia we call this "Cold". And the traffic services call it "Maybe slippery".
loooool, come on Vancouver. We get colder days than that in fucking Tennessee. Get your act together, already.
Isn't -2 C like 30 F? It was 24 F with a shitty wind in Massachusetts today and nobody cared.
Yeah. -2C is nothing, even for Tennessee. I've gone to school on mornings where it was -12ºC and nobody cared aside from the bus drivers...and they only cared because the shitty school buses were a bitch to get started. [editline]30th December 2012[/editline]
The accidents happen because no one can be assed to change their tires to winter tires.
Or even just a decent M+S tire. Sounds like a similar snowfall to what I get, and as long as you don't drive like a fucktard, a decent M+S with good tread depth will get you around just fine.
