The Exclusive Gap Between PS4 And Xbox One Has Become A Canyon
This topic is unavoidably going to turn into a fanboy minefield in short order, but the narrative is pretty clear. Sony is doing a great job cultivating high-quality exclusive sequels from its storied franchises, but also creating new IPs that are must-have games. This is in contrast to Nintendo, which always produces solid first-party titles, but lacks most everything that’s third-party multiplatform, and Xbox, which still has a few core exclusive franchises, but they’re not what they once were, and Microsoft is almost more likely to cancel new exclusive IPs than see them to completion at this point.
There are many stories about how Sony got this far out in front of its competition this generation, and the most common tale is how Microsoft botched the reveal and rollout of the Xbox One at launch, first messing around with the idea of an “always-on console” that possibly was going to use discs as mere licenses, but even after scrapping that idea, still launching at a higher price with less power and marrying the system to an albatross called “Kinect 2.0.”
But in the years that have followed, even in an age when exclusives seem to mean less than they used to, given how many huge games come out for at least two consoles plus PC, Sony has just been hammering Microsoft at every turn when it comes to exclusive games, and they don’t show signs of stopping any time soon.
Microsoft has certainly produced some good games. I loved Halo 5, and was satisfied with Gears of War 4. ReCore is creative and Forza always fills the racing niche better than its rivals. I think Sunset Overdrive was a promising new IP that didn’t get enough love. Dead Rising and State of Decay are uh, adequate zombie franchises.
But the list sort of peters out there, and the only game there I would actually consider can't-miss is probably Halo. If you flip to Sony, you have Until Dawn, Uncharted 4, Bloodborne, The Last Guardian, Nioh and Horizon Zero Dawn, with The Last of Us 2 and God of War 4 up ahead. And most of these aren’t just good. Many of the released titles are Game of the Year contenders in some capacity, which is something I don’t think anyone has said lately about Gears 4 or Halo Wars 2 outside of die-hard Xbox fans.
Xbox getting not only mundane exclusives but also slowly killing the concept off is going to hurt bad in the long run, all in all
I have an xbox one that was purchased by someone in my house, and they don't really want to use it. Both of us have literally zero reasons to ever even bother with it. Looking at the Xbone store is actually pretty pathetic, ESPECIALLY when you're already a PC gamer, and that's looking at it's store.
Just from memory I already can tell that a PS4 would actually see more use if I had one, even as a PC gamer. Even the Wii U, a console that was considered a flunk, has more appeal than the xbone.
The only reason I have ever even been remotely tempted to get an Xbox One is for the Halo Collection since I've missed out on every Halo post-Halo 2. That is obviously not enough to make me shell out for an entire new console however.
between nioh, yakuza 0, horizon, persona 5, and nier (although that's coming to PC as well) it feels like the PS4 is really coming into its own this year.
and almost all of those are from japanese devs, and no one there gives a fuck about the xbox
Honestly this is the reason I bought the PS4 Pro over an Xbox/Scorpio. PS4 has way more enticing exclusives. If I bought a XB, I would only be playing Gears and Halo. Meanwhile, I could play the entire Uncharted franchise, The Last of Us... the list goes on and on.

I mean, I'd rather get it for bloodborne tbh but hey

You can play 3 through 4 on a 360 if you don't mind 30 fps and a 640p native resolution.
While I have more console exclusive games on my PS4 I find myself playing my Xbone a lot more often.
PS4 is probably the better deal right now. I do have an XB1 for Halo and Forza, but I spend more of my time with the PS4, especially because it has VR. Cross-platform games are slightly cheaper on PS4 as well.
i think we need a poll or something of who bought a PS4 for the primarily for the exclusives and who bought an xbone for the exclusives so we can see how important that is generally (and us being a PC centric forum makes us a bit of a bad place to conduct it, but you know). i know i bought my xbox for halo, so, that puts me under that boat. i wonder how many PS4 and One owners bought it for the brand-recognition/console, rather than being concerned of the games on the platform
Up until recently, I had both systems. My biggest gripe with the PS4 is there is just not a lot of casual console gaming on it. I gave my PS4 to my girlfriends lil brother for free for christmas, with a pang of regret, but I've already beat all the story based exclusives I care about.
I love the xbox one for my media center and casual gaming. Anything else, I probably play on PC.

Actually can you can play all of them. CE has the rerelease, and 2 works pretty well with the emulation the the 360 does.

Yeah but he's already played 1 and 2
It doesn't seem so long ago when people were chanting "PS4 has no games"
Not that it was ever true.
Related anecdote: A few days ago I had a friend over and he asked me whether I should get an Xbone or a PS4, since I own both. I asked him to look at my game shelf, which has like 20 PS4 games (all exclusives) and a single physical copy of Overwatch for the Xbone.
Xbox really fucked up this gen. None of their exclusives are console sellers and they keep canceling their more interesting games.
Like, shit, I bought an Xbone for Scalebound. The only reason I still have it is for playing OW with my console buddies.
:snip:
-snip- Perhaps he just meant the re-release-

I mean, for a while it was basically "Bloodborne: The Console"

I had a PS4 since launch day and the line-up really was incredibly dry for the first 12 months

I mean, that "meme" was made in comparison to the Xbox One, but I don't think the XOne ever had more games than the PS4.
Most of my uni m8s got the Xbox One because its "easier since i had the 360 before". They regret it.
It's a shame. A console succeeding without exclusives would make me really happy.
Because fuck exclusives.

That's not how consoles really work.

Yeah issue is just that if it made you happy the console market would die
Yeah, I get it guys. I understand why exclusives need to exist, itd just be great if they didn't need to exist. Exclusives are pretty much a net negative consumer wise.

I get what you mean, you just worded that funky.
Got my PS4 for The Last of Us and Bloodborne but stayed for about 15 other exclusives that i currently got my eyes on like Yakuza 0 and all the Uncharted games.
I'm sure Xbone is a good console and i loved my 360 but like said multiple times the only reason for me as a PC gamer to get a console is for the exclusives and Xbox has just about zero interesting games besides the halo collection.

Also not sure how up-to-date this is, but:
PS4: 104 exclusives
Xbox One: 34 exclusives
Exclusives as in that they are only on that console and not on PC as well.
Not surprising when my thought of maybe sometime in the future completely flew off with the wind as soon as they announced that Forza games were gonna start coming out on PC. Only reason I'd buy an xbox. Now they gotta step their game up and make Forza VR compatible. Fix the performance kinks first tho

I actually bought a Xbox One and i shit you not one day after the announcement i cancelled my order since i thought its not worth it anymore.
Can't wait to play that game in 4K though on PC
I think the problem is that sony's rocky start of the PS3 basically compelled them to get really creative with their library to catch up with Microsoft, whereas the latter just kind of took its success for granted after gaining so much traction with early exclusives and did too little, too late to gather new exclusives.
The only people I know who own a xbox one are either kids who just want an easy platform to play call of duty, or young adults who have grown up with Halo and just want to keep playing it. Anyone else who sought to broaden their scope and try new things either switched to PS3 towards the end of the previous generation or got a PS4 this time around.
Bought an Xbone mainly for Rock Band, Gears, and Halo. Also had an enormous 360 digital library from when I played on 360 with Games for Gold.
I think it's been completely worth it so far. I didn't really get interested by of the exclusives on PS4 (except Ratchet and Clank and LittleBigPlanet 3), but on Xbox I have Halo, Gears of War, Forza, ReCore, Crackdown, and last-gen titles through BC, which I'm counting as an exclusive because only Xbox One can play last-gen games. Those things have justified my XBone purchase, on top of being able to play multi-plat games which I prefer to play on console (such as CoD, which is fucking awful on PC due to low player counts).
