Abbas confirms UN bid in the next 20 days, Israel pissed
Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian Authority president, has said in a speech that he is co-ordinating with Russia, and with Swiss and French experts, on the exhumation of late president Yasser Arafat.
"We are currently in co-ordination with the French investigators, the Swiss experts, and also the Russian government to open the tomb," he said in a speech on Sunday marking the eighth anniversary of Arafat's death.
The Palestinian Authority has vowed to unearth Arafat's body partly because of an Al Jazeera documentary that found elevated levels of polonium-210 on the late Palestinian leader's personal effects. If tests on his remains reach the same conclusion, it would offer more conclusive evidence that he was poisoned.
But there have been doubts that the PA will follow through. Nasser al-Kudwa, Arafat's nephew, this week repeated his "opposition in principle" to an exhumation, "primarily because samples collected after eight years may not be clinically exploitable."
"We hope for new facts that we can tell our people and the public," Abbas said, adding that the investigation was "bigger and more important" than the "media uproar" created by the documentary.
Abbas also promised that the PA will submit a bid to the General Assembly later this month for non-state membership at the United Nations.
"We're going to the United Nations in November 2012, not 2013, or 2014," he said.
The Israeli government is frantically trying to round up "no" votes to avert the Palestinian bid for recognition, and has also threatened to suspend the hundreds of millions of dollars in taxes and customs duties that it collects on behalf of the PA and transfers to the authority.
The United States opposes the Palestinian bid, and vowed to veto a similar measure last year; Washington insists that a Palestinian state will come only through negotiations. Abbas criticised that argument in his speech on Sunday.
"Some powers are trying to tell us that the two-state solution doesn't come from the UN but through negotiations," he said. "Negotiations are crucial. But to get UN recognition is also key."
Israel can suck a dick on this one.
Oh no if the Palestinians start having representation then we can't pretend they don't exist.
I seriously don't get how Israel gets away with this shit
Washington insists that a Palestinian state will come only through negotiations.
Right, because we all know how well that's been going.

The only ~negotiations~ that the Palestinians can do is wait for Israel to elect someone who isn't a batshit rightwing shit head.
Which doesn't happen so often.

I dunno how it'll change the political climate in Israel if this goes through. It shows Bibi is useless if anyone wasn't already aware and with it not being so direct of attack, I can see it causes a swing in either direction. Their system is so fucked up though that someone else could lead the coalition and do a worse job.
Negotiations have to happen at some point so while it's essential for Abbas he tries this, it'd take some real analysis to decide if it'll actually help being passed.

Friends in high places, or more specifically a friend in a high place.
too bad it will be rejected.
too bad it will be rejected.
I don't think it will get rejected, countries in Israel's bed only count for one vote in the UNGA, most of the nations will probably vote yes.

It does suggest that the US will veto it - not sure what power they have in the General Assembly though.

There is no veto in the general assembly. They're just one nation out of 193.
too bad it will be rejected.
If this is just a General Assembly vote it will pass in a landslide. All of these countries have already recognised the State of Palestine, and will vote for it

Edit: I think they are going for 'non-state observer' status. In that case, it will be a GA vote. So there is no veto

If the Eastern EU supports it, and the Western EU is against it, does that just mean the EU's stance on it is neutral or up in the air? I'd be inclined to think the Western member states would make the decision, but I don't know.

The EU gets more than one vote...

Finally someone that doesn't instantly blame the entire country and instead recognizes the problem is in the current government.

A bid for statehood has to pass through the security council, in which several countries possess a veto. The US can and will use it, as they have done many times in the past.

Wasn't there a study a month ago that said most Israeli's support Palestinians as lesser human beings.

Non member state requires UNGA vote, its been said quite a few times in the thread.

Welcome to democracy.
Feel free to tout all it's benefits, but at least be brave enough to be accountable when you purposefully put idiots into power.

Well, I always think that when people say 'Israel can go suck a dick' they always mean it's government. Everybody knows most of the country hardly has any say in this kind of thing.
It's just more convenient to say Israel than 'Israeli Government' or 'Netanyahu' all the time.

People often use the Countries name as a substantive noun for it's actions, not the individuals.
The EU gets more than one vote...
I'm aware of that. I was asking what the EU's stance on it is, regardless of how the member states vote.

You said Western EU states 'would make the decision'.
There is no ~decision~ they can make to begin with.
I'm aware of that. I was asking what the EU's stance on it is, regardless of how the member states vote.
There is none. 1/2 is for and 1/2 is against.

Yes they do, but they still require security council approval.
Yes they do, but they still require security council approval.
No they don't.
Welp there's my problem thought it was the full recognition thing again. Missed the "non-".

Wait I thought denmark was for palenstine? Sure I heard something like that a while ago.
Why are all of the "First world" countries against?
Why are all of the "First world" countries against?
Because Israeli influence.
Even North Korea recognize it.
