John Morillo, a 47-year-old Canadian man, apologized today for causing an international incident last night when he drank eight beers and then swam across the Detroit River, just to prove to his friends he could.
Speaking to the Windsor Star after being released from jail this morning, Morillo said in retrospect it was "really stupid" of him to drunkenly swim across the river, but not without adding that he wanted his incredulous buddies to know he'd pulled it off (emphasis ours):
"If I’m going to be in the paper, I’d at least like them to say I actually made it, even though I got in trouble and everything. I gotta pay fines and stuff. But I don’t want it to sound like I didn’t make it, because then my buddies are going to say 'ha, ha, you didn’t make it.' Because that was the whole thing, to show them I could do it."
sounds like one hell of a night
My hero.
Pretty sure I've seen that guy around somewhere (I live in Windsor) but this definitely sounds like something a Canadian would do. I can't count how many times my friends and I joked about trying this.
Even in Windsor that's still a hell of a swim.
The only person in the world trying to get into Detroit
"Hold my beer."
Man, so dangerous. Props to him for actually managing it though.

I was surprised it only took 8 beers.
Fucking hell this is an act of WAR.
201 YEARS TOO LONG, CANADA.
I'd say you'd have to be drunk to want to get into Detroit, but I think the guys before me nailed it.

Oh ok.
Similar to how the war of 1812 was started.
Where is Big Fat Dumb American when you need him
What was he going to do when he got to Detroit?
Starve or find an abandon house? Really, gotta think things through
Swim back? Like the article says he did.
how drunk do you have to be to voluntarily go to Detroit, let alone swim to there?
Having been on the Detroit river facing Canada, it is really tempting to swim over. It doesn't look that far and you're able to say you fucking swam to another country. In fact, it's sad that I can see Canada from my window but I've still never been there...
I tried Googling the Detroit River to see how close it was but I accidentally made a typo and put Detriot River. Just shows what I really think about when I hear Detroit. I eventually found a good view from street view on Google maps and it really is pretty close. I probably couldn't swim it though so this guy is a badass for doing this.

if anything we should be the ones apologizing to him.
I feel bad for him since it was at night. I'm from Michigan and been to Detroit at night. It ain't fun, that's for sure. Just groups of thugs at every other corner.
Props to him for making it across the river, though, even though it's all polluted. .
Holy fuck how drunk do you have to be to swim TO Detroit!?
