So I'm practicing with lighting and I drew this generic robut. I've got the basic shading done, but I don't know the steps on how to get it to look semi-shiny (as metal).

reflections
Silver - More or less like a mirror.
Metal - In the case of armours I often push the values a little more, not as much midtones.
Brushed metal - It's sort of like an inbetween of a grey surface and a silver surface.

Well this is the most I can do with my cruddy lighting skills

anything I can improve on?
Yes; your robot is defined by hard metals, so he is not softly lit. Those soft lights on the chest and face make him look more plastic; in order to get the metallic look, you'll need to use brighter, sharper highlights along the edges. However, you do have the right idea so far.
Alright, so I stopped using the soft brushes, and I upped the contrast a bit, and I have to say that that does look more metallic.

Bloom it a bit.
I like it, just the eyes bother me. You should try a solid color with a small light reflecting in them.
Robut? :crossarms:

And with small red eye dots. That'd be rad.
Looks much better in my opinion, it could always be improved on further but it has improved greatly.

atleast give the guy who made it a bit of credit.
But, to the OP, the tutorial it comes from is very useful if you go take a look at it.

Edit: Ninja'd
It's funny because I've been following Jansson's tutorial for a while now and it taught me about 90% of all I know about painting. It's just that it can be a bit too "advanced" for me to understand because I barely know anything about art.

Well I guess thats that then
that looks awesome
Indeed

Never said anywhere on my post I did it, I was just trying to help him, I even left the original image source.
But the pic is looking a lot like metal now.
Spraypaint a Slayer symbol on it.

In all actuality, the newest pic you posted looks pretty good.

I would like to thank you for that, as I have been searching for it for a while.
The robot does look very metallic in that third painting you posted op.
