Ukraine army helicopter 'shot down' near Sloviansk
Pro-Russian rebels in eastern Ukraine have shot down a military helicopter near the flashpoint city of Sloviansk, reports say.
The aircraft was reportedly hit after dropping off troops at a military base.
Sloviansk has seen fierce fighting between separatists and government forces in recent weeks.
President-elect Petro Poroshenko has vowed to tackle the uprising in eastern Ukraine, saying he would deal firmly with "bandits" and "murderers".
The helicopter is reported to have come down during heavy fighting between Sloviansk and Kramatorsk on Thursday.
Earlier this month the separatists shot down two army helicopters, also near Sloviansk, killing a pilot and serviceman.
How about we stop with the bullshit in the news, It's a war now.
Same to you Putin, stop lying and admit some of them are your boys, and charge right into your own grave, just like Hitler.

but the thing is there is only one known unit of russian goverment origin (GRU Vostok battalion, have their own APCs and such) but the rest are just civilians from russia/locals who are only being supported by the Kremlin
there aren't any "little green men" like in Crimea
of course its a war, but Putin is playing a clever game and isn't sending direct troops
The word "Bandit" seems to have a stronger meaning in eastern Europe than it does in the rest.
This linguistic phenomenon puzzles me greatly.

Also hooliganism as a crime, which from context seems to be their version of vandalism / property damage :v:

Who exactly is Vostok Battalion in Ukraine? Wikipedia says they're a Chechen Spetsnaz unit and veterans of the Chechen and Georgian wars, but surely this can't be the same guys? If it is, the implications are awful, Ukrainian Military vs Russian Military.

Speaking of, rumours that Vostok Battalion has seized Donetsk HQ from.. the Separatists.

Does Russia do something differently that I wasn't aware of? Over here, special forces are considered part of our military and fall under Military Command and the POTUS. They are also bound by most of the same rules (although they can be told to break those rules, like illegally entering Pakistan to take out Bin-Laden). Is Vostok Battalion somehow different from that?
I just hope this isnt Syria 2.0 where people are executed just for being on the other side.

so far this has been a secular war, and also the ukrainian gov is not out right trying to kill their own people, just secure their country and kick out the obviously russian backed/trained troops that are taking over their place

Vostok Battalion is so spec-op they break pretty much all the rules. Their actual chain of command is impossible to trace, they're supposed to be part of the military as GRU unit, but at the same time in some special cases they answer directly to the leader of Chechen republic.

So that means someone high up in Russia ordered them to be there? That's an unsettling thought. Then again no surprise, Russia's been pulling strings the entire time.

Why would he do that? Who the fuck wants to charge right into their grave? Dumbest comment I've seen.

From what I read (wikipedia if thats a source you're willing to acknowledge) there are lots of chechnyans going to Ukraine and they have admitted to their leader telling them to go there, this isn't traceable back to Putin though.
It does mean though that the uprising in Ukraine isn't the Ukrainian army vs Ukrainian separatists, this is the Ukrainian army vs a number of well armed foreign forces.
Maybe not traceable back to Putin directly, but Chechnya is still part of Russia. It's the Ukrainian Army fighting a unit of the Russian Army, even if that unit isn't operating on Putin's order. On the other hand, I'd imagine Putin knows they're there and has the ability to recall them if he wanted, so he must be ignoring it at best and condoning it at worst.

You can correct me if I'm wrong, I don't know how the Russian Army works well enough to say anything with certainty.
