An "underground" website famed for selling drugs and other illegal items has been targeted in a cyberattack.
It appears the site suffered from a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack over the course of Tuesday and Wednesday.
Silk Road is only accessible through Tor, a service which allows users to browse anonymously online.
Several US politicians have called for the marketplace to be shut down, without success.
DDoS attacks involve flooding a website with more traffic than it can handle, therefore knocking it offline.
After two days of intermittent service, Silk Road's administrators told users on Wednesday morning the site was back in action - but said they could not rule out further downtime.
"Silk Road is open and accessible," said the site's administrator, writing under the user name Dread Pirate Roberts.
"As soon as the attacker finds out, he will likely change his tactics and try to take the site down again.
"Hopefully he won't be able to, but time will tell."

It's all part of the plan
Where will I spend my bitcoins now?
This got me confused with Silkroad Online for a couple of minutes.
Won't be long before it's back, to be honest.
It goes down pretty regularly. You don't really need to DDoS it to do that :v:
That means they know the IP. Spooky.
last time i was on there they sold guns. granted, that was like....months ago.
Since the beginning of the site guns haven't been allowed, but people would put them up anyway.
I think they briefly put up a "Weapons" category but it didn't last long, and neither did the sister site "The Armory" which was made solely for guns. It lasted less than a month.
I haven't been on there in ages though so I don't know if anything's changed.
Buying drugs on the internet sounds really fucking sketchy.
REALLY SKETCHY.
When I read silk road I thought you meant the actual game haha

I red an article last year about some idiot that bought insulin on Silk Road. He started using it and woke up in the middle of the night with extreme blood sugar levels (like 250-300) and nearly died. He examined the "insulin", and it turned out to be saline water or something worse.

At least they didn't take our bitcoins with them when they were taken down. @_@

why would he do that? was he trying to get high off of insulin?

I've actually used it before, completely legitimate. They've always had the policy that they only sell things that hurt yourself, not others. The website has never sold guns, maybe you're thinking of blackmarket reloaded?
i am very sure that i saw guns for sale on that site.
maybe i'm mistaken.

I read from wikipedia that there was a sister site for guns, but it was shut down last year due to "lack of demand".
As if the world just has so much guns that no one needs to buy them.

Probably for guns with the serial numbers scratched off.

lack of demand probably means few people were buying because smuggling a hot gun around the states is a bit more difficult than smuggling some drugs. and also probably a much bigger offense.
That DDoS probably took down a bunch of unrelated Tor nodes too.
And for fuck's sake, you don't need to be a "hacker" to DDoS people. You don't even need your own fucking botnet, you can just hire somebody who owns one.
why would he do that? was he trying to get high off of insulin?
First, he bought the insulin off of SR because it was apparently much cheaper than getting it from a proper source like a pharmacy.
Second, you don't get "high" on insulin, you get dead. If you OD on insulin, you had better find a source of sugar to counteract it, or risk going into a coma. In his case, the insulin was fake (saline) so the exact opposite happened (dangerously high blood sugar.)

hacker now is more or less just an umbrella term now.

IIRC there was. You can even buy body armour too.
Or maybe I was in another underground weapons website.
