The National Security Agency and its UK counterpart GCHQ have been developing capabilities to take advantage of "leaky" smartphone apps, such as the wildly popular Angry Birds game, that transmit users' private information across the internet, according to top secret documents.
The data pouring onto communication networks from the new generation of iPhone and Android apps ranges from phone model and screen size to personal details such as age, gender and location. Some apps, the documents state, can share users' most sensitive information such as sexual orientation – and one app recorded in the material even sends specific sexual preferences such as whether or not the user may be a swinger.
Many smartphone owners will be unaware of the full extent this information is being shared across the internet, and even the most sophisticated would be unlikely to realise that all of it is available for the spy agencies to collect.
Dozens of classified documents, provided to the Guardian by whistleblower Edward Snowden and reported in partnership with the New York Times and ProPublica, detail the NSA and GCHQ efforts to piggyback on this commercial data collection for their own purposes.
Red wings and cheese need to be delivered to the house on the left.
Edited: Don't forget the crisps.
Our tax dollars at work.
Now, we can say for sure that Apple lets malware in to their app store.
what the fuck man, this is ridiculous.
[editline]27th January 2014[/editline]
they act like it's not a big deal by giving them those fucking cutesy names im fucking SIMMERING WITH ANGER.
you know this is kind of really bad
even though its nice to make cute jokes about how these organizations are "wasting resources spying on those loser angry birds players," the more real and serious implications are pretty massive
it's unfortunate there hasnt been any pushes towards holding these organizations responsible, beyond trivial court hearings and some minor coverage on certain news networks, that give these findings only a few minutes of air time, before shifting to something much more important, like the grammys, justin beiber, and the super bowl
I like those cheeky names.
I know very little about Apple products, but, short of just not downloading any exploitable apps (betcha money they tried to make as many apps as possible broken for them to use so gl with that) or jailbreaking doesn't seem like there's anything you could do about it.
I also like how part of the problem yet again comes from the congressmen who are supposed to be doing their jobs, overseeing at least a part of this shit just skipping out, (in)directly causing shit like this to happen.
Dear NSA, please stop weakening security across the entire of the fucking internet just to find out how I eat my pizza -signed, the internet.
How much do you want to bet at least 10% of the malicious/hyper-info-leaky apps on unofficial Android app stores and clones of popular apps (like fake Instagram, etc.) are actually written and maintained by the NSA for this exact purpose?
I mean, think about it. The NSA isn't supposed to spy on American citizens; most Americans will be using the Play Store because it's available on their phone unless they're fucking with roms or bought a phone that isn't Google-licensed (for Gapps and shit). However, in basically every country where there are Android phones but no official Play Store presence, there are third-party repos filled with all sorts of shit. The majority of users will not be Americans (and if they are, they just might be :yarr: anyway so bonus), feeding right into the NSA's mission statement.
And, for that matter, how much do you want to bet that China's responsible for at least another 10%?

The article makes it pretty clear that this isn't the NSA or GCHQ creating the vulnerabilities so they can perform mass collection, they're just taking advantage of the poorly-written apps that send way more data than is possibly necessary across the Internet. The cutesy smurf named stuff is malware deployed against specific targets (as in, getting it onto their smartphones) and is a totally different thing.
Maybe now people will start paying attention to what information their freeware is broadcasting to anyone who's listening.
The slides prove that the NSA is just like every phone developer out there, release on Android late and Windows Phone never
