• Microsoft issues KB3173040 as a final in-your-face reminder to upgrade to Windows 10 for free
The promotion of Windows 10 upgrade by Microsoft has certainly proved controversial, and it was only this week that users were given an easy way to decline the upgrade offer. With the 29 July deadline for free upgrades fast approaching, the clock is really ticking now, and Microsoft is giving Windows 10 one final push. Window 7 and 8 users are being offered update KB3173040. Its sole purpose is to advertise the availability of Windows 10 and to remind people that time is running out. Given the criticism Microsoft's decision to promote the Windows 10 upgrade deadline with a full-screen notification is a little... odd. Microsoft does seem to have learned something from the Windows 10 upgrade debacle. While the full-screen reminder is certainly very in-your-face, the release notes for KB3173040 explain that it is possible to postpone or prevent the re-appearance of the notification. If you are running Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 and you're still considering taking advantage of the free upgrade to Windows 10, hitting Remind me later means you'll be nudged again in three days' time. Microsoft explains that not everyone will see the reminder. It will not appear if any of the following is true: You have a recent version of the "Get Windows 10" app installed. You have selected the Do not notify me again option. Your computer is detected to be incompatible with Windows 10. You have previously uninstalled Windows 10 after you upgrade. Your Windows 10 installation failed and rolled back. You have hidden the "Get Windows 10" app notifications. You have disabled the Windows 10 upgrade or you have disabled the offer screen through registry key settings. so it doesnt show if you told it to fuck off earlier how can i manufacture outrage now
Stuck in the middle of this right now. I don't want to miss out on the new directX, but at the same time I've heard that windows 10 further kills compatibility with older games. What should I do?

Is WIN 10 actually any good ?

system shock 2 works fine unless by "old games" u mean like robinsons requiem which still might work
Is WIN 10 actually any good ?
Yes. Very much good.
Is WIN 10 actually any good ?
Apart from certain things (such as you having no control of updates if you're on a "Home" license), yes, very much so. Essentially a faster version of W7 There are still some compatibility issues with older hardware, though
I was extremely sceptical about W10 and finally decided to just try it, since I could still go back. I'm glad I did it since W10 is faster for me than Windows 7. Also had no problems with any programs/games.
How long does the upgrade process take approximately? Considering finally doing it and just not sure how much time to put aside for it. Just as long as usual?
Is WIN 10 actually any good ?
It's not bad, that's about it. The differences are minor.
How long does the upgrade process take approximately? Considering finally doing it and just not sure how much time to put aside for it. Just as long as usual?
Took a couple of hours for me.
If you're worried that Windows 10 breaks older games, it's not that. Those games were probably broken when Windows 8 came around. It's really only a problem with older games that require the desktop to be in 16 bit color - since Windows 8, I think, the desktop is forced to 32bit color mode. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Don't worry, though. Every single broken game I've come across has fixes from the community.
How long does the upgrade process take approximately? Considering finally doing it and just not sure how much time to put aside for it. Just as long as usual?
Took me 30 mins on my desktop, much longer on my laptop.
How long does the upgrade process take approximately? Considering finally doing it and just not sure how much time to put aside for it. Just as long as usual?
Depends on your PC. Took ~20 minutes for me, about an hour and a half for a friend of mine with an older system (i5 750, no SSD). After the update was finished he instantly ran into incompatibility issues (no sound, no network) and instability, and was forced to revert back to W7

What should I do?
I upgraded to Windows 10 during 2015's summer and I've been using it for gaming ever since (I had to reinstall a few times, but that's okay). So far, I haven't had any compatibility issues with games, and I personally play a lot of old games, as I like old games a lot. Windows 10 is generally very good for gaming.
I started using Windows 10 about a month ago The other day a bluetooth adapter I just bought that was made when only Windows 7 was out had crashed my $700 pc Also a linksys network adapter I got doesn't even work unless I put stuff into the command prompt every time I turn on the pc from sleep/shutdown Probably just freak accidents though :v:

The hardware manufacturers do have to actually pay attention after all. If the bluetooth adapter is some no-name thing it can probably use generic drivers, which Windows 10 has a surprising amount it. The Linksys adapter however surprises me, I thought they'd be a bit more on top of that stuff. Depending on how you moved to Windows 10 that may be the cause of some issues, my old PC would regularly have a non-functioning Explorer.exe every other boot as I upgraded it over the top of Windows 8.1. Since installing it from scratch it's stopped doing that.
Most of the issues I've deal with in w10 were regarding non-clean installs.
Most of the issues I've deal with in w10 were regarding non-clean installs.
So if I don't do a clean install there's a risk that things might not work correctly?
So if I don't do a clean install there's a risk that things might not work correctly?
Strangely, it seems so. The OS will still work fine for the majority of the time. But you might bump into a few ugly little crashes or freezes with system executables like explorer.
And now it's fullscreen to showcase the unnecessary frustration you'll be dealing with in the future (unless you're on Win8 already). Good job.

I plan to bite the bullet and just do a clean install before the 29th. I'm going to upgrade eventually, might as well get it free.

Nope, still not switching unless something stops working in 7.
