E-Sports Entertainment Association (ESEA) - which lets serious CounterStrike players face each other down in anti-cheat modes - infected about 14,000 of its customers with the code, which ended up mining about 30 bitcoins over two weeks last spring.
According to today's Bitcoin value, that's about $15,000 they had players mining without their knowledge.

Piss, I didn't see it.
Wasn't this something that happened a while ago or was that a different company I'm thinking of?
It might be the same thing. It's in the news again because now they have to pay a fine
They got busted on this a while back but I think it's now that they actually have to pay a fine.
Holy shit, my friend was joking about a company doing this
Holy shit, my friend was joking about a company doing this
I had an idea for something like this too.
Very clever, but this is not a good idea for profit. It would be nice if instead for paying for software, you mine bitcoins for companies. That's a win-win situation. Using your customers as a kind of bot net. How immoral.

All you get is a shit client that has malware in it and breaks after every update. On top on that you get to deal with bullshit like the season being delayed by three weeks so you have to play the play-offs after new year. Basically ESEA is a horrible league run by crooks. This fine was well deserved.
they made a profit of -985,000. i'd call that a success
they made a profit of -985,000. i'd call that a success
Not even that, the money they made off of the bot-net would have been seized.
i hope they can pay the fine in bitcoins
