Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke by telephone to German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande, voicing strong concern about the Ukrainian military onslaught. Putin said he expects the Ukrainian president to immediately launch his plan to end the violence, the Kremlin said. Last month, Putin ordered his military to withdraw from the border in an apparent attempt to ease the crisis, and NATO confirmed that the bulk of an estimated 40,000 Russian troops had pulled back. But on Thursday, NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said that Russia has deployed a few thousand additional troops to the border, calling it "a very regrettable step backward." "If they're deployed to seal the border and stop the flow of weapons and fighters, that would be a positive step. But that's not what we're seeing," Rasmussen said in London. The Russian Defense Ministry refused to comment. The allegations came as heavy fighting raged near Krasnyi Liman, just east of the rebel stronghold of Slovyansk, a city in the Donetsk region that has been the epicenter of violence during the past two months. Vladislav Seleznev, a spokesman for Ukrainian forces in the east, described the area as a strategic supply corridor for the rebels. He said in a statement on Facebook that four government troops were killed and 20 wounded in the fighting Thursday. He said up to 200 rebels were killed and hundreds wounded. The claim could not be independently confirmed. Rebel chief Igor Strelkov said in a statement on YouTube that his men were far outnumbered and outgunned and would probably be forced to retreat. Strelkov, clad in combat fatigues, bitterly scolded the Kremlin for failing to help the rebellion and issued a desperate plea to send in troops. "I hope that they have enough conscience left in Moscow to take some measures," he said. There was no immediate response from the Kremlin, which has ignored previous pleas for help from the insurgents. Putin has faced strong pressure from nationalists at home to send troops into Ukraine following the annexation of Crimea in March.
http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/ukraines-president-offers-cease-fire-east-24199892
Hold on Russia we're trying to deal with Iraq atm
I've seen this video passed as a convoy from Crimea to Donetsk, can anyone with more knowledge confirm if these are Russian vehicles? The first flag is the Flag of Crimea, and the second one is the separatist flag (dunno what it's called) Pic of the separatist flag at a rally:
They're definitely Russian vehicles (BTR-80s, T-72(?)) yeah, but that doesn't mean much.
There was a mix of Kamaz and Ural trucks in that convoy.

The Russians use the 4320's mostly now.
its difficult to judge based on vehicles since Ukraine and Russia's militaries use very similar vehicles
its difficult to judge based on vehicles since Ukraine and Russia's militaries use very similar vehicles
there is a trick to this, look at plating on the tanks, russian and ukrainian tanks have different methods to cover them. it is indeed difficult to determine them from these distances from the shit quality they are coming in, the trucks are also very difficult to determine.
Russia Gets a Claim on Kiev
Hold on Russia we're trying to deal with Iraq atm
Which makes it the opportune time for Russia

They can put on any flag they want. And I'm not a military expert or something, but these vehicles do look like russian ones, by the way. Especially these big ural military trucks. They are really wide spread though, so they could come from anywhere.
Hold on Russia we're trying to deal with Iraq atm
Exactly.
there is a trick to this, look at plating on the tanks, russian and ukrainian tanks have different methods to cover them.
Nah, the most common Ukrainian tank is T-64BV which have exactly the same ERA as any common Russian tank, and the way its covered makes it very difficult to distinguish T-64BV from T-72B variants. You think T-64BM, and Ukraine has less than 100 of them, I doubt they'll see any action against separatists/rebels/terrorists/what have you. Regarding trucks, Ukrainian military is extremely diverse, making it, let's say, difficult to say anything with any degree of certainty, but I imagine Ural and Kamaz trucks shouldn't be too common.
Clearly what we have here is a Russian invasion.
The Russians could have built in kill switches for all their equipment so its easier to invade other countries that use them :tinfoil:

I'm going to go to Russia's border with an assault rifle. That'll teach them to fuck with 'Murica! Wait it's Ukraine? Still I'll go to help.
This is precisely the kind of place between a rock and a hard place I've been hoping to see out of sheer curiosity. I'm very interested to see how Putin is planning on handling this situation without potentially losing a good chunk of his constituency, a.k.a. nationalists, and/or his trust/position as "Stronk leader of Slavs". As crazy as he may be, unlike his zealous people, he knows he can't keep pushing further at this point. There used to be an ill time when he actually could've justified an invasion, but it's long gone.
If Russia goes in it'll be under the guise of helping Russians, and getting payment for the gas bills.
If Russia goes in it'll be under the guise of helping Russians, and getting payment for the gas bills.
Vice would have to remake their documentary on the worlds scariest debt collector.
Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke by telephone to German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande, voicing strong concern about the Ukrainian military onslaught.
to be fair ukraine is fucking ridiculous right now
Can confirm this. I live near the border with Ukraine (aprox 2 hours of driving) and have seen a helicopter squad in formation patrolling around. There were 7 of them, and they were flying so low,so I naturally felt a bit spooked. Lots of refugees from different cities, but mostly from Lugansk too, have seen so much cars with Ukrainian numbers lately. I hope that those separatist movements will stop their activity soon, because not only they are prolonging the conflict, but also putting their families and innocent citizens in dire situation.
to be fair ukraine is fucking ridiculous right now
Are they? They're fighting armed separatist. Walking in and kindly asking them to "come back" to Ukraine won't work.
It seems Russian troops crossed the border?
Are they? They're fighting armed separatist. Walking in and kindly asking them to "come back" to Ukraine won't work.
that seems pretty ridiculous to me and moving troops to your border doesn't sound very strange at all?
It seems Russian troops crossed the border?
Looks like pretty much the same (or very similar) column as the one from the previous video. If it's the same, then are they just rolling around the city without any purpose or what?

The flag of the Donetsk PR a variant of Saint Andrew's cross.
