What did you think of it? A good adaption? I personally really enjoyed it. At times it was a little wacky and the female characters were weak. But all in all a good film.
I saw it and loved it. It had amazing cinematography and the acting was superb. The music choice was a little odd, but it's to be expected considering Jay-Z was one of the producers for the film. [editline]19th May 2013[/editline] The book is still the best version though.
Not seen it so I should keep my trap shut but Luhrmanns films are generally heaps of style and candy floss over very little content. He maybe should have been some kind of cinematographer under a director instead of sitting at the helm. I hate his films usually and a few of my friends who have seen it, say they hated it too.
They glazed over all the character development in the first half of the movie, so for the rest of the movie you're watching the effects of various relationships and events of which you know next to nothing about. Plus, they gave away Gatsby's secret past in the middle for some reason, and left out [sp]his father coming to the funeral[/sp].

I just saw this movie tonight, I love the book. It's wonderful.

Honestly, I really enjoyed the movie, despite the terrible reviews it got. Haven't read the book though, so I may not be the best judge
Liked the movie but oh god the music and time period
Luhrmann's style of not keeping the camera on any particular character(s) for more than two seconds in several parts nearly gave me epilepsy. But I still enjoyed it. I guess it was there to give it a dreamlike quality or something. Those costumes, man.
Saw this yesterday. It was a hell of a lot better than the trailers led me to believe. Complaints -It has a fuckton of jump cuts at the beginning, which is a bit distressing. -Some line deliveries were really poor. -Toby McGuire is being Toby McGuire Compliments -Toby McGuire, despite being there, wasn't all that bad. -Leonardo DiCaprio was great in the role. -Visually, very nice. -The Modern Music, which I thought was nutty at first, did fit the feel of the film and didn't really detract from the message. [editline]22nd May 2013[/editline] Also, I don't know what to make of the Wolfsheim character. He's supposed to be a Jewish mob fellow, but here he's very obviously an Indian person.
Also, I don't know what to make of the Wolfsheim character. You're not allowed to ever portray Jewish people in a negative way, or else the ADL will be beating down your door.
-The Modern Music, which I thought was nutty at first, did fit the feel of the film and didn't really detract from the message.
What. It didn't even fit so many scenes
The main point of the film is to show the excess of a rich, partying lifestyle, and the addition of modern songs made the message more relate-able to modern times.
The main point of the film is to show the excess of a rich, partying lifestyle, and the addition of modern songs made the message more relate-able to modern times.
Nah, that's really not the point at all
The main point of the film is to show the excess of a rich, partying lifestyle, and the addition of modern songs made the message more relate-able to modern times.
Boardwalk Empire delivers the same vibe of the roaring twenties without blaring in modern music.
I agree. The music fit occasionally, but was still the only downfall of the movie. I don't get why people didn't like the movie. This may just be me being a nerde, but I think a little caravan palace would have fit AND kicked absolute ass, at least in the party scenes. missed the point of nick and daisy completely jordan was an anti-character no dog in the smoke and no line about the books pissed me off but i liked the organ in his house
i think the music was incredibly unfitting and spiderman was not the correct man to play carraway not so much a negative but i think the whole nick / jordan thing should have been in the movie more than it was; it was like they had it in but cut most out and left it as a hint if they were or not but it was pretty great otherwise
Their music is inspired more from the 1930-40s than the 1920s but it would've been a much better 'modern' choice than what they had in the movie.
I read the book long enough ago that I'd pretty much entirely forgotten what it was about. But I thought the movie was fine. And what's so wrong about the music they used? Just that it was made today instead of 90 years ago? I mean, it's obviously a conscious stylistic decision, not a case of "lol old music sux" or "audiences are retarded and won't understand." It's perfectly fitting in the context of the story, just not fitting in the context of the time period. It's like that Romeo + Juliet movie that Luhrmann also made. Obviously modern-day gangsters don't casually spout Shakespeare lines at each other and refer to their guns as swords. I think Baz Luhrmann is aware of that fact. It's just a stylistic choice to put a creative spin on material that's been done many times before.

also all the scenes with that ridiculous gangster fucker MR GATSBY URRRR THERES CHICAGO ON THE LINE...... completely fuckin uneccesary
it just didn't work. i can see why they did it but i simply don't agree with it and i think if they had swing that it would've been a much better choice. i liked some of their liberties that weren't in the book; i think having carraway tell the story while in an asylum some time later was a good idea and it worked but i think that music choice was just so unfitting and odd
Is there any reason it didn't work?

What was the orchestral song played right when Jay Gatsby was introduced during the party? He turns towards the party, revealing his face, and this super cool loud dramatic song plays, and it isn't an old one from the 20's..
What. It didn't even fit so many scenes
It was all party music or music you would listen to at a club or party. It may not fit the times but they weren't actually listening to Jay-Z and Skrillex. Thats how the people back then viewed the music. 99% of people would think what they were seeing was shit smearingly retarded if the people were all getting shitfaced drunk and raging to smooth jazz.
