We continue to focus on eliminating bots and scrapers from Pokémon GO. Rooted or jailbroken devices are not supported by Pokémon GO. Remember to download Pokémon GO from the official Google Play Store or iTunes App Store only.
However, it only took half a day for users to find an Android workaround.
Apparently it's using Google's SafetyNet which is also used in Android Pay
Huh, when I read that line I assumed they meant that they would have their accounts be null and void to future updates or something like that, not barring them completely. Of course, those kinds of people were gonna find a way around that, so honestly it reads like a PR move to me more than anything else.
yeah good luck trying to bar rooted android phones since there's a million different bypasses to get around stupid blocks
Such a pointless measure just to eliminate bots for such a shallow game.

Honestly I've had fun with this game, socialized with complete strangers over digital pets, put some extra exercise just to get digital coins to get better digital pets. Whenever I've had to go somewhere by foot I'd just open the game to make time pass quicker. Now I can't play the game anymore and I'm very dissapointed that this is the way it has to be.
How to bot Pokemon go:
1.) Emulate a phone in the android SDK - or any other emulation tool
2.) Inject GPS packets while sniffing for whatever you want the bot to do
3.) Repeat step 2
Literally unstoppable. I don't know why they're trying. Do they think sites that scrape for data are powered by thousands of phones?

How to cut down all this bullshit:
1) Make it necessary to verify your phone number to fight in gyms (and trade in the future)
2) Make the game purchaseable instead of f2p
How do bots even meaningfully impact other user's experience besides an increased server load?
Pokemon go is dead
having people verify their phone number before playing (similar to prime in cs:go) would probably deter most of the bots
really no use trying to stop it as a whole

Phone verification won't do much because of things like google voice, and making it non-ftp would cut out a huge segment of their market.
The game itself is simply too much of a non-game for this to matter in the first place, though. Bots HARDLY impact user experience- if anything, they've made it somewhat better, due to the fact that people will travel to an area EXCLUSIVELY for the Pokemon spawns there. Niantic has failed at properly focusing their efforts and the game will probably die out altogether within a year.

well i mean said bots would have the capability to control gyms with the advantage of being able to catch pokemon anywhere on this planet

Sure, its fun, tic tac toe can be fun, both are pretty shallow. it just feels silly to go to lengths such as stopping tons of legitimate players just to ensure the "digital integrity" of a game that doesnt really have much to it to begin with.
if you really want to keep playing its easy to bypass anyways, not that they really deserve the players they dont want.
no matter the depth or content of the game, pokemon go is still a multiplayer game and the devs should most definitely try to fight against bots (even though this particular method of doing so is useless)
someone who spent their time walking around and catching pokemon fairly just should not be contested in any gym by someone who emulated the game on their computer and faking the GPS
Well it looks like I'm no longer playing Pokemon GO. AFAIK the workaround doesn't work on KitKat
They already had Jailbreak "protection" when the game first came out which just closed the app (then they removed it for some reason). The app checked if it had unusual sandbox privileges which is easily patched by returning the proper sandbox permissions to the app. Not sure if this version is any different to what it used to be.
do people still play this crap?
do people still play this crap?
Yes. I know it's difficult to imagine that people do things that you don't do, but they do!

is that really a big enough of a deal that niantic should be focusing on trying to squash the botting, rather than actually improving their embarrassingly bare-bones game?
i don't think you realize how little of an advantage this actually is, as the people who are willing to walk around and catch pokemon are going to be far, far more dedicated to the game than the people spoofing GPS's are. by virtue of that, they're going to dominate the gyms anyway.
gps spoofing is pretty much confirmation that you're not taking the game seriously
Beyond the fact that this is futile and it's already been worked around on Android, way to keep dwindling down your already receding playerbase. Nobody I know even bothers to launch the game anymore.

I don't really think you know what you're talking about. People who are able to bot/spoof can gain way more power a lot faster than people who play legitimately. Especially bots, which can be trained to amass and level up the most powerful Pokemon possible as quickly as possible and then hold onto multiple gyms endlessly, automatically defending and/or retaking gyms from legitimate players all day long. There's literally nothing you can do against those. Coming back at a different hour or using the strongest monsters you've got makes no difference.
No matter how much you try to downplay it, it's an extremely frustrating thing to encounter. I'd say that's worth quashing, considering it actively negatively affects the legit players' experience.

there is also always a workaround for jailbroken users

No, I guess I don't know what I'm talking about. I had no idea bots were that advanced for this game.
I was mainly referring to GPS spoofing, which I honestly don't think needs any downplaying. It's a non-issue.
Pokemon go is dead
It died the second Hillary opened her mouth to say that god-awful fucking "pun".
is that really a big enough of a deal that niantic should be focusing on trying to squash the botting, rather than actually improving their embarrassingly bare-bones game?
those are two completely separate issues, so ideally they would work on fixing both problems at the same time.
also idk if it's just me or you're justifying botting this game (or just saying who cares?). to me, it doesn't matter how stupid i think this game is, cheating is cheating, and these people should be punished as such. saying it's okay in this case is going to spread a message that it's okay on other games as long as you don't like it
It would be nice if they optimized the stupid game so I can play it on my 4s without constant crashing instead of wasting their time combating an unstoppable force.
Literally it's just adding a check for the iPhone version and downgrading the graphics, or even just adding an option to downgrade the graphics.
I'd like to play it more, but my phone's GPS is borked (can't fix my position more finely than a 2km radius, and can't track my movement for shit) and the game guzzles battery like it's a diesel Volkswagen.

You know it's pretty horrible if you're someone who doesn't give a rats ass about Pokemon GO?
Go somewhere to socialize and everyone is staring at their phones and talking about their favorite Skinner-box.
For Cydia users:
Add this repo http://www.cokepokes.com/cydia/ and install MasterBall

Or you can install TsProtector 8+ which sandbox's all apps with jailbreak protection.
