A Bay area man who said he was banned from Starbucks for life over a parking issue can get his latte fix again.
Rob Rowen said the ban has been lifted, but he wants to see more changes made.
Rowen said he was banned from Starbucks for life because he called out customers who were breaking the law. He said he noticed several customers illegally parking in handicapped spots at the Starbucks on South Dale Mabry Highway, in Tampa.
"I saw someone park, and it was obvious they weren't handicapped," Rowen said. "There was no handicapped parking sticker. It wasn't a handicapped plate. And so I said to him, 'You're parked in the one handicapped space, and you need to move your car.'"
Rowen used his cellphone to take pictures of the violations, and then confronted them inside of the coffee shop. He said the manager accused him of harassing customers and sent Rowen a letter banning him from Starbucks for life.
Can some people really not walk the extra 10 steps it takes to park in a regular parking spot?
IMO the manager was right. This guy isn't a cop, if he sees someone in violation of the law, he shouldn't harass them, he should just call the cops.

And they'll do what, nothing?

Tow the car and give them a $500-$1,000 fine... It says so, right on the sign, dude.

Well that's a matter for the towing company, so you may as well just call them directly if there's a sign.

Better than harassing them, which is illegal.
Better than harassing them, which is illegal.
The article really doesn't touch on what he did though. Did he get into slapfights, or did he just go "hey, why the hell are you doing this?" and didn't force the issue more than that? One is harassment, one is just stating a fact to that person.
I find it remarkable that a manager of a single starbucks location has the power to ban someone from all starbucks locations. I wonder what the process is for that, they fill out some paperwork and send it to corporate, and corporate automatically sends the letter and I suppose updates some database?
One easy fix is to have signage that you can see when you order, letting a person know that they have their handicapped parking reserved for those who need it," Rowen wrote. "Finally, as a way of saying they are sorry, how about a latte one day for all their disabled customers? Talk is cheap, let's see some action from you Starbucks to show that you really care
I am confused about this, is he stating that the handicap signage is not clearly visible? If people are unable to see it clearly and park there, but this guy is running up snapping pictures and holding customers up then I can see a reason for the ban.
Honestly I'd have called the cops and let them tow the car. Getting your car back from being towed is a huge fucking hassle from what I've been told. The fine is just icing on the cake compared to that.

had a friend get arrested [while driving MY car] for some bullshit callout about him using a phone in a construction zone (he had a headset, and there was no construction zone, just some cones off to the side where some utility work had been done a few weeks prior). I had to bail him out and pay the police station a cool hundred bucks to get the paperwork for the car. Asked them where it was towed, because the forms didn't have that on them, and they said the name of the place and told us it was just a short walk up the street.
so, we walked up the street, reached the end, and never saw this company. ended up having to phone into the company to get the address, turns out it was near two townships south of us, and they were closing in 15 minutes, which is about as long as it takes to get there. great.
had to wait til morning to go out to the place, handed in my paperwork thinking I was done, and the lady says "that'll be $400". turns out they charge their own fees: a good 350 for the towing, then 50/night if it stays on their lot. COOL.
other than that it was painless
on topic though, the other week I found an AMAZING parking job barely blocking portions of two handicap spots. Presumably the guy came the wrong way up a one-way parking stripe area (where everything's angled), then parked at an angle across them because he didn't have enough turning radius or motivation to at least correct himself before getting out

I'd have called the cops, but it was apparently a carpool full of fucking cops. It had stickers in the windows for the county sheriff and they were all inside eating

I think they only meant that one starbucks, they just worded it strangely.

Those yellow striped zones are there for easy access by emergency responders. So whoever parked there is a jackass.
Those stripe zones are for unloading and loading wheel chairs.
They're cock bags

And the idiots parking in the handicapped spot would consider calling the cops harassment. You lose either way.
Tow the car and give them a $500-$1,000 fine... It says so, right on the sign, dude.
That's highly dependent on where the violation is.
There are many places that have handicap parking but actually have no legal way to enforce it due to property laws and such.

The manager is in the right. Maybe banning him for life was a tad extreme but as a manager myself, if some dude has beef with another dude, it's my job to make sure they either take it outside or that the first dude fucks off if the second dude doesn't want to be bothered.
Vigilante wannabes are so annoying. You are not the law, drop the policing and let actual police do the job. Only intervene if you can help someone if someone is getting mugged or something. But when it comes to road law violations, don't butt in.

while these people are nerds who probably need to find a hobby they are still right. in some places citizens can get 'deputized' as a handicap parking enforcers and are allowed to write legal citations if they do a training class with the sheriff's dept. the problem with calling the cops is the response time of around 10-15 mins and by then the people in the handicap spot could have already left

I can already tell we're going to disagree in every thread.
That said: to everyone who parks in handicapped spots and is not handicapped, and also to people who don't put their shopping carts in the cart returns,
Go fuck off and die the world would be better without you, and i am the kind of annoying asshole who would call you out in public

And the owners of these establishments have every right to tell you to leave their property for causing a disturbance.
I can understand your frustration but seriously? "Go fuck off and die" because someone didn't put their cart back?
You were a mod? Grow up.
It's just an expression.

Get their plates. Take pictures if it's convenient. Cops have email addresses, phones have email capabilities, boom.

Actually one is battery and the other is harassment if they ask you to leave them alone and you dont.

If i watch some lazy twat park in a handicap and then an old handicapped woman has to walk down the block and acrossed the street because the handicap was unlawfully taken, which happens often in my area, I'd say something. Somebody needs that shit more than you
