• Steam account got restricted and have -9.99€ on it. Should I repay to get rid of restriction?

I had birthday on the 20th January the next day at school I got a credit card gifted from a classmate. He said it was his old card and needed to get rid of it anyway because he got a new card or something. I took it and went to the computer room to get half the money on Steam. The rest was spend on stuff like beer and junk food. At the 26th January I got the first message from Steam support telling me that my account is restricted for 9 weeks (29th March). I was pissed and have beaten the shit out of him the next day at school. Today, the 28th February I got a message telling me This: This account will have restricted functionality I'm not sure what I should do now. Not only am I pissed, I am also really depressed about all the games I got myself. I was happy at my birthday and what I get now is a shitload of stolen credit card shit. I want to know if it's now restricted forever or not. And not only that, I also want to know why I have all of the sudden -9.99€ on my account. Does that mean that if I put 10€ on my account I can get it unrestricted again? Any advice?
Contact Steam support and explain the situation?
Do what's best and contact steam support.
Wait why did you beat the shit out of him I don't follow
Wait why did you beat the shit out of him I don't follow
Because my classmate gifted me a stolen credit card.
Wow. Was that classmate trustworthy? I mean, was he a real friend? Anyway, I can't say anything more that explaining to Steam.
Surely you would have known as it wouldn't have had his name on it?
Because my classmate gifted me a stolen credit card.
I might be confused here, but you used a credit card your friend gave you on games steam and now your restricted. Didn't you wonder where he got it from? You should feel lucky your account has been restricted, as technically you stole from someone else's account
Credit card? Gifted? Are you serious? Did you stop and think for a second that people don't gift credit cards? I would understand if there was some sort of mishap with those prepaid steam cards you can get from gamestop but this was rather expected. Unless the OP made a typo of some sort.

Using a credit card without being it's owner and then complaining your account got stolen(edit: I meant to write closed, not stolen). Bravo. edit: why the dumbs? He used payment information belonging to another person or maybe even his mom and got his steam account disabled. What a surprise. (Valve now only locks account actions and not bans it completely like before, he got lucky)
Not stolen, restricted. Was that really tl;dr for you?
The point still stands.
The point still stands.
Alright it sure was stupid from me taking the credit card, but I still don't know why I have -9.99€ on my account. Any ideas?
I have to ask, how old are you? Unless it is an actual gift card, never take a credit card from someone. There is no such thing as having a few dollars left on a credit card. That just means there is a few dollars left before it's maxed out and needs to be paid. How thick can you be?
Not stolen, restricted. Was that really tl;dr for you?

I got a credit card gifted from a classmate. He said it was his old card
Excuse me? Because I don't get it how any sane person would accept a 'credit card' as a gift. You realize that card means nothing? It's just a plastic representation of your (his) bank account. It's still registered to his name, his address, his cell phone.

I had already learned economics from the previous year that taught banking (which included credit cards), the stock market, investments, etc. Also, the word "credit" should have been a huge tip-off. Credit =/= free.
Oh this happend to me before its only a ban from trading/purchasing and goes away on the date i wouldin't bother fighting it but up to you also you are really stupid for accepting a "credit card" as a gift.
Do you go to a hauptschule?
No, realschule.

my school never taught me anything about banking or economics, but by the age of about 11 I knew what a credit card was and more importantly what credit card fraud was is there just some kind of language barrier here or did this guy genuinely take a random credit card and attempt to purchase things? I'm honestly shocked
Maybe you have -9.99 because his parents found out and disputed the purchase.

But seriously, just write to steam support and explain the situation. Contact his parents (if it's their card) if needed and tell that hundreds of dollars (your steam account) is at stake. If the card is really stolen from somebody you don't know then... Let's hope a very nice and understanding support technician will stumble upon your ticket.
Credit cards aren't as big in Europe as they are in the USA, there are a lot of other available options to pay with.
Likely the same available options that we have here in the US. While I admit my country is more than over-zealous with credit cards, they are definitely not our only option. As far as what you are learning in school, it is a shame that some form of economics is not a required study to graduate for you all. It was required for me years ago, and my step-brother had to take his economics course last year. All schools, regardless of nationality, should teach some form of economics because that is how the entire world revolves. Lastly, even if you don't know anything about economics or banking, credit is a concept you should have learned as a child, even if by mistake. That, or you should know what the word credit means. The whole act that occurred here is nothing but pure idiocy. I'm still having a hard time fathoming it. EDIT: Also, good luck with Steam support. They are not going to be forgiving of this situation. They will have the same view point as most of the people in this thread: You should have known better. If it's not your name on it, it's not yours to use.
Steam support wrote back telling me that they will contact my email personally. I'm not sure why but I hope to get this sorted out. Thanks for the help for those who told me that I should contact steam support! And also thank to the others for just reading the OP.
