How do you define what the 'ultimate' cheese on toast is, when everyone has their own preferences? I guess you could say that on average most people like it better that way, but I wouldn't go as far as calling it perfect.
My ultimate cheese on toast is one sprinkled with love from god.

Especially when the best cheese on toast is where you grill the bread on one side to toast it, and then flip it over and add the cheese to the other side, allowing it to be totally browned when finished. They also missed the drowning it in tobasco and worcester sauce stage.
Also, white bread is too vague, the best cheese on toast comes from good batch bread, and good mature cheese.

I usually toast my bread in the toaster, butter it, put cheese on then throw it under the grill to melt/toast a bit more, then add tobasco.
I like cheesy cheeses, but I much prefer milder cheese like Red Leicester, though.
To be honest, it's greasy enough with the cheese, I'd argue butter is unnecessary.
Since you're heating the grill anyway, often best to just toast one side of the bread with the grill as it heats up. More power efficient, and it seems to work better in avoiding burning the corners of the top.
Worcestershire sauce is all you need on a cheese toastie.
Sliced cheese? Bitch you grate that shit so it can melt faster. You also want the cheese to colour a bit so the sugars in the cheese caramalise on top. At least thats how I like it done.
I like to age mine for a few years in my deposit box.

Mine has to have cheddar that is mature as humanly possible, so much better.
Complicating it this way just makes it imperfect.
They should've made a formula with the amount of cheese as a function of the thickness and surface area of the bread. The temperature, time and distance as a function of the amount of cheese & toast.
They just wrote down a specific recipe and presented it in an awkward manner.
I'm imagining a bunch of people in lab coats and safety goggles bustling around a room full of identical toaster ovens with racks of bread types and racks of cheese types. People cutting cheese carefully and measuring with micrometers, partially disassembled toaster oven with a fixed rack and a heating element on a modified drill press to control the distance.
