Oh... And here's some Bootlegs... Bootlegs are legal I think? http://www.archive.org/details/GodspeedYouBlackEmperor
Great band.
Yep awesome band, I find it hard to believe anyone who's a regular here hasn't heard them but if you haven't, they're essential listening.
Aren't they working on new shit?
Damn East Hastings is an amazing song. Didn't they have it not put onto the CD for 28 Days Later because they didn't want to be mainstream or something like that?
Aren't they working on new shit?
Yes sir! Bruce Cawdon confirmed it in an interview.
in my opinion the greatest band of all time. I owe them everything [editline]25th October 2011[/editline]
Damn East Hastings is an amazing song. Didn't they have it not put onto the CD for 28 Days Later because they didn't want to be mainstream or something like that?
no [editline]25th October 2011[/editline] they have more than 14 songs but a lot of them have never been recorded in studio or are hard to find. Also the CD and Vinyl versions of F#A#(loop) are totally different. The two most notable are Albanian and Gamelan. Sunshine + Gasoline is the rare studio recording from a Fly Pan Am split. go to archive.org and get as many live recordings by them as you can also listen to A Silver Mt Zion [editline]25th October 2011[/editline] and efrim's solo project http://cstrecords.com/cst078/
F#A# is a great album. I crashed out listening to it for one night and it was awesome.
and this band is way better live than in studio [editline]25th October 2011[/editline] fucking automerge fuck you elu
One of my favorite bands, F#A#inf is one of my favorite albums of all time too. I've seen A Silver Mt Zion twice this year, I prefer them really, fucking beautiful music. Was listening to them when I saw this, and I even talked to Efrim after the show.
The also have a ton of songs on that cassette. But that shit is very limited. Sunshine + Gasoline and about 28 Days Later
A heavily edited version of the song "East Hastings" by the post-rock band Godspeed You! Black Emperor appears in the film, but the track is excluded from the soundtrack, because Boyle could only obtain the rights to use it in the film.
it's not that he could only obtain them, the band refused to give them to him. Boyle actual met face to face with the group to discuss using their music and such, never actually giving a complete reason. Read this article about the whole thing. How he found the band is a great story http://www.guardian.co.uk/theobserver/2002/nov/10/features.review27

yes
i mean i can understand where they're coming from when they call them that, but it's a poor choice of words considering the connotation that genre holds
neo-classical is a very broad genre that can span not only power metal but simple traditional neo-classical which is simply modern "classical" music
they don't really rock though, more plod and crawling than rock
they don't really rock though, more plod and crawling than rock
Post-Plod :v: [editline]27th October 2011[/editline] I have to see GY!BE live before I die. Oh, and A Silver Mt. Zion are pretty amazing, and are great for filling that hole everyone gets after going through GY!BE's discography.
Set Fire To Flames is a great related band as well.
Oh yeah, been meaning to check those guys out. Fly Pan Am too, get a big feel of the Montreal scene.
and this band is way better live than in studio [editline]25th October 2011[/editline] fucking automerge fuck you elu
i don't understand how the drummer perfectly times that little crash thing in Sleep
Seeing them live was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. They cut videos to go along with their music and you only get to see that kind of material live. Also on a side note, Do Make Say Think, a band which has played a lot with Godspeed and is on the same label, is similar to them but less ambient/atmospheric and more musical, taking cues from more diverse genres with the most prominent being jazz. In their earlier days, they were dubbed the jazzier Godspeed. They are essential directly behind Godspeed, if you like their post-rock musical aspect. Set Fire to Flames is like Godspeed, but more experimental, pouring over from postrock into experimental and noise. A Silver Mount Zion is a band which was made by members of Godspeed, they sound very alike, albeit with more vocals. This list has some of its most loved albums: [t]http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1707143/postrock.jpg[/t]
http://www.archive.org/details/GodspeedYouBlackEmperor Bootlegs if anyone wants them.

Yes its spelled like that. [editline]26th October 2011[/editline] But yea thats a good list, I need to check out some of it myself.
Anything on Constellation records is recommended by me for Godspeed fans
I enjoy this band as much as I do this one:

PROTIP: Listen to these bands with Analytical earphones (RE-0 etc.)
Mono are awesome.
mono is the shit but they aren't not very godspeed in the realm of post rock
They're more of the Mogwai side of post-rock, which isn't a bad thing GY!BE are much more cinematic and grandiose while at the same time not being cinematic and grandiose at all
The first time I heard F#A#, I was lying down on my bed imagining a story with it. I was scared by what it was doing to my imagination. Amazing album.
