If you’ve seen the film you may remember prisoner Daisy Domergue (Jennifer Jason Leigh) strumming melancholically on the antique Martin in Minnie’s Haberdashery, only for John Ruth (Kurt Russell) to grab it from her and smash it on a beam.
Well that explains a lot about why that scene feels so real and Leigh acts so shocked.
“All this about the guitar being smashed being written into the script and that somebody just didn’t tell the actor, this is all new information to us. We didn’t know anything about the script or Kurt Russell not being told that it was a priceless, irreplaceable artifact from the Martin Museum.”
Thats a pretty awful thing to do.
Why the fuck hire an antique of all things for a fucking scene where it was written into the script specifically that the actor would destroy it.
That's just such a waste, I just don't understand.

it was supposed to be swapped for a cheap guitar
i don't know why they wouldn't use a new, replica guitar since the movie takes place in the early 1800s. The guitar is supposed to be new.

Well fuck, whomever fucked that is for the blender.
[editline]edit[/editline]
Oh I see, Kurt wasn't informed that it was an antique nor did anyone actually stop him and he smashed it without realizing, this is just one large clusterfuck basically.
the stunt guitar didn't show up for the film sesh
The problem was that Tarantino didn't cut the scene before Russel smashed the guitar, since Tarantino likes to do everything in one take.
So it's his fault.
Jennifer Leigh really liked that guitar, and wanted to buy it after filming was over. Tarantino ended up buying her a guitar from the 1880s.

Stunt guitars these days....
Why the hell couldn't they use a replica for the smashing bit? I understand making everything as "real" as possible but holy shit.
hahaha that's fucking great
Why the hell couldn't they use a replica for the smashing bit? I understand making everything as "real" as possible but holy shit.
It was an accident.
Why the hell couldn't they use a replica for the smashing bit? I understand making everything as "real" as possible but holy shit.
Basically that was the intended outcome, they were going to stop filming and replace the Antique Guitar with the replica, however everyone neglected to tell Kurt Russel about that particular part.
He must have done it thinking it was a fake and since it was so sudden nobody had time to stop him from destroying it, it was pretty much an accident, I wouldn't say it's Kurt Russels fault, he didn't know, must have come as a shock to the people who knew it was an antique at the time as well, so they didn't have time to save it.
So yeah pretty much accident all round.

You can see the look of genuine shock on her face
I didn't really like this movie. I saw the roadshow version of it and hooooly fuck was it long. The entire movie takes place in one location, and is 99.999999% talking. Most of the dialogue isn't even a "who done it" mystery, it's just people talking about... stuff. Tarantino could have cut like 1 hour of dialogue from this movie. I think the cinematography was great but the writing wasn't really. The trailers made it seem like more of an action movie like his previous films but this was by far the most boring tarantino movie I've ever seen.

idk i enjoyed it, was a bit like reservoir dogs how it's pretty much shot with limited locations and is more acting than stunts or whatever
it has a great story and shit, i thought the guitar was new but made to look oldish, had no idea it was an artifact. You'd think Tarantino would know that and do a cut when the rest are getting coffee?

He had to rewrite it, didn't he? After the original script was leaked or something? Maybe that's why it wasn't as good. I don't know, I never went to see it. From what I saw, it looked like it was a beautiful film (as you said), but it didn't give me the same feelings that I got from the previews of Inglourious Basterds and Django. I'll watch it when it comes out on DVD in a few more months.

Movie was good enough, sure, maybe too much talking but I don't care because the tension was super high during the second act. Loved it.

it was supposed to involve more locations and have a different ending but he sat with this version which honestly isn't bad at all, i mean maybe a little more locations would be nice but fuck it's a Tarantino film to the bone and it's got all the classic elements we've all came to love

I thought it was a fantastic adaptation of the stage reading it was based on. It reminded me a lot of Theater in the Round, which I've always been a fan of.
It was a drama, not an action film. Or even a whodunnit. I thought it was a pretty masterful resurrection of several lost arts.
Should probably throw a little mention of spoilers in the title.

The script wasn't rewritten because it was leaked, it was rewritten because it started out as a stage reading by Tarantino. He sold out a theater by sitting on a stage, reading the script, for four hours.
The rewrites were basically designed to adapt it for a film format.

Nah, the script was leaked and Tarantino flipped his shit and almost canceled it entirely but a few months later did a stage reading of the original draft, announcing his intention to stay with it and the fact that he was writing a new draft with two new endings.
Holy shit, although terrible this is sort of funny.
Kurt Russell can do whatever the fuck he wants.

Try watching the almost 5 hour long version of Das Boot then if you think the Hateful Eight was boring.
This is definitely a Tarantino thing.
It's a bit weird that they would use an actual 19th century guitar cause since the movie is taking place during that time the guitar shouldn't look like it's 140 years old.

The movie was long but it wasn't boring, and personally I think a lot of the dialogue was great. I think people talking about "stuff" is part of what makes Tarantino movies (or at least this one) great - he didn't have to spend half the movie talking about fuck all, but real people don't talk about plot all the time, especially when these people didn't know there was a plot going on.
Holy shit that makes the scene a whole lot fucking different
