sub $1000
... And here I was, hoping it'd be around 500 bucks at most. I know 500$ is below a 1000$ technically, but surely they wouldn't call it that in that case.

They are emphasising how expensive existing headsets are.
It's pretty fascinating how the Rift will pretty much completely tax our hardware. This will also be a great challenge for engine developers, meaning that console ports pretty much aren't Oculus-compatible.
Then the people like I, and many others that I imagine visit this site are fucked for wearing glasses.

You know, considering how much of their customer base probably wears glasses, you'd figure that they'd be more accommodating.

They're way ahead of you, the Oculus Rift comes with removable eyecups for glasses-wearers like you and I.
This is a good write up.
As someone who bought a 65 inch 3D LED TV for £4000 the sub $1000 price tag doesn't seem so bad. Plus weirdly I'd much rather watch a 3D movie on a headset like this than in front of my TV with the glasses on.
I'm looking forward to getting our dev kit :v:

All you need to manage is 1280x800 @ 60fps, or I assume 1080p @ 60fps for the consumer version.

Note that if you're farsighted (you can see far away without any assistance but not up close,) you will be able to use the lenses that somebody with normal eyesight would, because your eyes focus on infinity when using the Rift. You will only need assistance when you're short-sighted, or if you have some other sort of vision condition.

Technically 640x800 (or 960x1080) @ 120 fps (a 720p or 1080p screen split in half with 60fps per eye.)
[editline]24th February 2013[/editline]
You're looking at about a 15% decrease in performance if it's well optimized, with a max of about 25%-30%.

[del]Yeah but don't forget that they're trying to make the consumer version 1080p an eye (which will destroy your PC pretty much)[/del]

Cheers! I've been getting a tad enthralled by all the Oculus-related blog posts that have been put out. Some absolutely fascinating theory work being put into practice.

Consumer version will be around $300 and improved in various aspects (resolution, latency, possibly FoV)

nonono, they're aiming for a 1080p screen that's halved, one side for each eye. Just like the dev kit works, but it's halved 720p

The input lag introduced by the Kinect might lead to a disconcerting experience.

Is there a source for that? Because I'm pretty sure that's not how 3D works.

What the hell does 3D have to do with this?

Source on the focusing on infinity part? Cause he is correct on that.

Too bad I can't see clear before the first 5 cm and can't see clear after 7 cm.
So it doesnt matter for me.
Above is the example of the worst possible eye condition apart from being blind.

oh that makes so much more sense
Here’s how they work:
If you have great vision (or you wear contacts), your vision inside the Rift will match your vision in real life. You’ll use eyecup set A.
If you’re farsighted, you’ll have no vision problems in the Rift because the optics are focused at infinity (which makes your brain think it’s looking at something far away). You’ll also use set A.
If you’re nearsighted, the additional eyecups, B and C, allow you to see inside the Rift as if you were wearing glasses. Again, this is because the lens cups change the focal distance. If you’re moderately nearsighted, you’ll use set B. If you’re very nearsighted, you’ll use set C.

I haven't followed the Rift in a while, [del]what are with the eyecup things? Do you get all of them/can you change them?[/del] nevermind that, I must have missed that bit.

Great. Now it's going to be worse when 12 year old admins ragdoll you and start flinging you around the map on Gmod.
