It's the holidays, and as Christmas day and new year's draws closer, I keep hearing songs and wishes of world peace. I'm making this thread for you- the reader, to open up your mind and ponder the possibility, or impossibility, of world peace. So, to get to the point, Do you believe world peace will ever be achieved?
To be honest, I don't know. I think that it probably will be reached eventually, no matter what. How long it may take is impossible to tell, but that's not the question.
I've asked many people, and most think it will never be achieved. They think this because:
-It's never been achieved before.
-Technology gives us the power to kill more people with more efficiency, easier. See: Nuclear weapons.
-Corruption in governments.
-Humans are naturally violent.
-Religious difference will spark war.
These are all very good points, and I can't say that these won't necessarily be the end of all mankind. But I can offer my positive points of view. The rest is up to you.
-I think capitalism is the answer to our troubles. Though it may have it's flaws, it's arguably, the best form of government (besides a monarchy with a good leader). I say this because money keeps the world turning. Money sets everyone at an equal level, and people will never stop to get some. I have some examples, too.
-America, Japan, England are mostly capitalistic, and they are also some of the most best countries.
If you look at your history, it shows that the English and French have never really gotten along too well. I don't have any first hand experience, as I am not French nor English, but I'm referring to history. And we all know history repeats itself. History repeats itself. History repeats itself. Anyways, in 1988 construction began on a channel-tunnel from England to France and ended in 1994. This is a good example of people putting aside their differences for a chance to make a buck and to get along. The "Chunnel" provides a good opportunity for tourism and is an efficient way to transport goods.
An Extra-Terrestrial, or aliens, landing and introducing themselves, either with violence or bearing peace. However far fetched this may seem, the pressure of an Alien presence would force the humans into an alliance. And if the aliens do attack and we do make one human union, does that count as world peace?
The end of humanity will also be the beginning of world peace. However grim this may be, it's another option to world peace.
Whether any of these come true, or if humanity does end, is not up to us to decide. Until then, Merry Christmas, and have a happy new years everyone.
**Note: There are a lot of opinions here.
Humans have been killing each other since before we knew how to convey the concept that the word "killing" means.
It will stop when we stop being human.
If every political leader didn't act stupid, then it'd be easy to achieve.
Everyone will find a reason to hate someone, so the only real way to get world peace is to get a single group that agrees on everything. In other words, when everyone but one person is dead.
It will not happen. As long as there are 2 humans left on this planet they will fight.

unless they're gay.
:smug:
Humans are made to survive at all costs, if it means attacking someone else it will happen.
And the world is relatively peaceful now.
There may be a few countries trying to blow the shit out of each other, but other than that it's pretty peaceful compared to what it's been.
Before the advance of modern civilization, humans lived just as any other species on the planet did. And they existed for thousands of years before the rise of the human civilization.
Sure, they still fought, but just as any other species on the planet does. Thus, world peace has been achieved before among the human community and is still possible. It's arguable, however, that it will never happen with our current structure of civilization.
Humans are made to survive at all costs, if it means attacking someone else it will happen.
Not necessarily. There have been many occasions of self-sacrifice in the name of another human, including starving oneself just to let another live (mothers, etc.).
Additionally, humans don't necessarily fight out of necessity, but rather they fight over things of abstract value, such as territory, women, and positions in a social hierarchy. This is observable with many social species in the animal kingdom.
tl;dr Most fighting is derived from abstract things, not for survival.

Again, humans are pack-animals. Before agriculture, the human was a hunter gatherer that relied entirely on teamwork.
Thinking all humans are violent and will find a conflict just for the sake of it seems strange to me. That kind if Machiavelli-an thinking leads to no progress in our society.

"Killing" is not an action unique to humans.
When you say we will no longer be humans when we stop killing, you are also arguing that we will stop living.
It depends on your definition of world peace, but I think that world peace doesn't mean a censure in killing, but rather a halt in all political standoffs.
I agree with most everything you guys say. Especially this:
And the world is relatively peaceful now.
Nukes make the world peaceful. And there's no major war going on.
i voted yes
give me rainbows
Peace will be achieved the day all humanity is gone.
Keep dreamin'.
Peace will be achieved the day all humanity is gone.
Again, pre-civilized humans existed just as any other species on the planet does.
Under your definition of world peace, you would have to exterminate all life before world peace is achieved.
Peace is subjective. Even before humans, there were animals killing each other off. That's peace, yet it isn't.
Yes.
Peace is subjective. Even before humans, there were animals killing each other off. That's peace, yet it isn't.
We just need something to direct all of our malice against that isn't on our planet.
Like pluto.
Fuck pluto.
everyone tries to be philosophical and cool here, I no approve :Dawkins102:
World peace will probably never be achieved, ever. And I'm ok with that, wars bring technological advancements which are usually given a civilian application when the war is over.
As long as there are two things alive on this planet there will be war. The only way world peace could be achieved is if life, in it's entirety, is snuffed out. Nothing left in the sea, air, land, nothing microbiological, absolutely zero life.
The most likely way to achieve world peace would be to have everybody economically dependent on everyone else.
A good example of this is America and China, America buys Chinese goods and sells American currency while China sells Chinese goods and buys the American currency. If either of these countries have economic troubles the other one does too. So in order to keep economic stability they keep peace.
If we all get nuked and all life dies, then we would have peace
Only when we start galactic conflicts and humanity needs to stand together as one.
Fuck yes ^
World Peace can be only achieved if we all upgrade to Human 2.0

"So long as there is Humanity; there is war."
I go by that quote.
I'm afraid not, for many reasons really. One reason I understand is that it helps maintain economies and gives way for technological advancement, something this species is dependant on. So it probably wouldn't happen, unless we all start trading of course.
If Britain had stuff to trade...
Not when we have Muslims....
Call me a pessimist, but it's never going to happen.
Sad truth, guys.
It'll never happen. It's that simple.
There's always 1 or more persons who don't agree to something. That's when it fucks up.
