For Poppy, the secret to a long and healthy life is threefold: a good diet, plenty of exercise - and the occasional kebab. Now, the tortoiseshell cat from Bournemouth, Dorset, has been recognised as the world’s oldest living moggy after making it to the age of 24 - equivalent to 114 in human years.
I never understood the point in having to non-human animals ages like this. Just say 24 years (it's actual age) and be done with it.
They develop faster and have shorter lifespans, it's a way of equivalenting the age of the animal to our own in terms of ratio I think.
The oldest cat in history was a feline called Creme Puff who lived in Austin, Texas, and survived for an astonishing 38 years and three days.
Thats pretty ridiculous.
I never understood the point in having to non-human animals ages like this. Just say 24 years (it's actual age) and be done with it.
It's how "healthy" it is in comparison to adults. A 24 year old cat is not akin to a 24 year old adult. The adult could run for miles, but the cat could run for a few minutes before heart failure
I never understood the point in having to non-human animals ages like this. Just saying "It's 24" most people wouldn't really be impressed.
Thats pretty ridiculous.
Jesus! That cat nearly rivaled the average lifespan of some third world villages.
That poor cat looks like it's seen one too many days.
I never understood the point in having to non-human animal ages like this. Just say 24 years (its actual age) and be done with it.
because it gives as an apt tool for comparison instead of having to know the average life span of every animal in existence??
That could easily be fixed by including with the article "The average lifespan of cats of this breed is X years".
It's more dramatic to say "WOW IT'S 114" rather than just "It's 24, most cats die when they're 16".
That could easily be fixed by including with the article "The average lifespan of cats of this breed is X years".
PEOPLE. LIKE. BIG NUMBERS. [editline]19th May 2014[/editline] also there's a kebab joke to be made, but I can't come up with one
I think it's mostly a way of explaining to kids so they understand how old it is, "that cats 24 which is like you being 114"
Okay, for an article about cats they really need to put some sort of warning before people scroll down the cute kitty pictures to see this: Damn you daily mail, I was planning to sleep after reading this article!
My cat was 22 years old but there were no records of it because she was adopted from the pound.
Old kitty, cold kitty, little ball of fur. Frail kitty, blind kitty, heart murmur.
Is it really the world's current oldest cat? It's a pretty hard thing to document. A lot of cat ladies that might not know how to use the internet, cat owners in places where the internet isn't used much, people who don't know how old their cat really is, people who might not know that their 26 year old cat is a rare thing...
That could easily be fixed by including with the article "The average lifespan of cats of this breed is X years".
that doesn't show how much of an outlier it is to be several standard deviations away from the mean. placing it in human years allows for people to understand how extreme it is for something to live that long. you get no sense of the bell curve with just the average.
PEOPLE. LIKE. BIG NUMBERS.
Anime fans don't.
Anime fans don't.
What? The only sense I can make of this is that you're trying to make some kind of paedophile jab, and if so, you should put more effort in.
Damn you daily mail, I was planning to sleep after reading this article!
This is why we must not have good healthcare systems and healthy fish/vegetable based diets.
How would you even get a birth certificate for a cat?
In most country's in Europe you get an animal passport. Breeders are required to register the cats/dogs in order to legally sell them. Those pp contain the information like date of birth etc.
How would you even get a birth certificate for a cat?
Animals don't have birth certificates per se, but most animals from breeders come with document stating their age, linage and other useful info; These kinds of documents can be easily confirmed by contacting the breeder so they provide a basis for confirming that the owner isn't lying about or forgetting their actual age. Not saying this is necessarily the case here though.

The oldest cat in history was a feline called Creme Puff who lived in Austin, Texas, and survived for an astonishing 38 years and three days.
Thats pretty ridiculous.
Seriously. Who the hell names their cat Creme Puff? What is the matter with some people?
I didn't realise my town housed such an old cat. That meat pie looks quite positively disgusting. But then again, it is cat food :v:
Aww, poor old kitty =(
I never understood the point in giving non-human animal ages like this.
Life-expectancies are different you wally.
