Market research firm IDC has released its quarterly figures for computer sales in the first part of 2012. It’s surprised some pundits by claiming that far from the traditional PC era being over, worldwide shipments are up. They’re even showing growth in debt-saddled, austerity shackled and market saturated Europe, of all places.
In a release accompanying the info, the firm describes buyers as ‘still cautious’ and possibly waiting on Windows 8, but highlights problems in the hard drive supply chain following flooding in Thailand as the most significant factor holding back purchases. Despite these problems, it says that while it was predicting just 0.9% growth worldwide the actual market expanded by 2.3%
That means a further 87 million PCs were created in the first three months of the year than existed previously, up on 85 million in the same period for 2011. The figures include sales of Apple Macs, but not tablets of any OS or flavour. Apple was the third largest vendor in the US, although outside the top five worldwide.
The most impressive performance was by Chinese manufacturer Lenovo, which increased the number of PCs it sold by 43.7% globally to nearly four million a month. ASUS also fared well, putting out 22% more machines than previously taking its total to more than five million (presumably laptops) for the period.
The salient point is that while computer use is changing rapidly, spurred on by adoption of mobile platforms, it’s not necessarily the PC that’s suffering. In fact, tie this story in with last month’s news that 2011 was a boom year for sales of PC games, then set it against the declining revenues from console software and you’ve got a fairly convincing PC renaissance story.
Of course, it could also just be an errant blip against underlying trends, there’s no getting away from the fact that PC sales were generally down last year in most developed markets.
I apologise for the headline, by the way. For the first ten years of my journalistic career I absolutely refused to talk about ‘Qs’ when I meant something to do with months of the year. At some point I gave up fighting the good fight against the hateful expression. Sorry.
Makes senses, since the only people claiming there is a "post-PC era" are tablet manufacturers or companies where their x86 PC sales aren't nearly as strong as their ARM based device sales.
Before anyone starts bandwagoning I hope you realize this isn't just for PC games, it's for hardware and software and everything else inbetween, which isn't surprising - so don't jump on your superiority bandwagon like you always do.

I just bolded that part since this is a computer gaming forum. But yeah you're right.

Take a look at the comments on the article, everyone has done just that :v:

So does this mean we'll see more and more games on PC?
Doesn't this count both desktops and laptops? The lenovo success makes me think as such.
It annoys me how people have it in their head that PC gaming is 'dying', because it isn't and it never really was.
Thanks for saving it, Razer!
PC are master race, it all started from pc's there would be no consoles or games if it wasn't for pc's, you can program, make 3d models, paint, edit things, store things, it's just endless, pc will always be number one, it simply cannot be changed or beaten by consoles.
Thank you Sandy Bridge!
"refuses to die"
That headline makes it sound like it's hanging on to its last breath or something.

Going strong since 1981!

It appears your attempts have failed, Mr. Kotick.

Tablets wont be good enough to overturn the PC, and on top of that, consoles seem to be getting a rough batch of shit incoming.
It appears your attempts have failed, Mr. Kotick.
I don't see what kotick has to do with this. Call of Duty is still released on PC/Steam. More than could be said for most games. Even Dark Souls is screwing it up from what I've seen recently.
I really do not understand where the Idea that PC gaming is dying came from.
You people just fucking wait when omni tools are invented. I didn't see any PC's in Mass Effect.

Damn, still going strong in 2160...
The PC doom crying will return once the new consoles start shipping out.
PC isn't refusing to die, it's not even close.
It annoys me how people have it in their head that PC gaming is 'dying', because it isn't and it never really was.
I don't see how it can even die. More and more people are getting computers so there's a huge consumer base for everything related to computers. Fewer sales isn't the same as dying.
PC will always be around, right up until they figure out how to get as much capability as a desktop PC into something as small as a mobile phone or tablet, which is a tough task due to cooling. So until then, the PC will be fine

They already have.
The typical smart phone these days has enough processing power to handle the needs of 99% of people.
The software isn't really there yet, but it's getting there.
[editline]19th April 2012[/editline]
Of course you can't run whatever games PC gamers are jerking off to today, but most people don't care about games.

Tell that to the industry that grew stronger than the cinema and music industry combined. Most people these days do care about games, even if it's just angry birds or some other stuff, hell even my mom who was completely against videogames back when I was young plays a shit ton of casual games on her laptop and smart phone now... :v:
nobody has ever really claimed pc's were a dying market except for bloggers or random people on the internet
anyone who actually understands the tech industry realizes that there will always be a place for PCs, even if smartphones and tablets do end up taking a larger share of the market
The PC doom crying will return once the new consoles start shipping out.
I give it all of 6 months after there release before people start getting pissed off with them.

It doesn't require "most people" to care, either. Look how much profit games like MW3 and BF3 make
As long as people want it, there will be people to provide it

Razer did.
