• Going from e6750 to q9550, performance question

I currently have an e6750 @ 3.2 Ghz. I've read that slower quad cores (q9550 stock speed is 2.83Ghz) are sometimes worse than their higher speed dual core counterparts. Is this really true? If it is, how high would I have to OC my q9550 is see a noticeable difference in performance?
Have you already bought the Q9550? Why are you buying it? For games? If for games, you may well be better off with a new graphics card instead (obviously depending on what you have at the moment).
It's true that you're better off with a higher clocked dual core over a slower quad for gaming, as most games won't take advantage of the quad. However, I would recommend just OCing the quad up to a higher clock.
This is for a combination of both gaming and future-proofing.
Have you already bought the Q9550? Why are you buying it? For games? I have an 8800GT.
However, I would recommend just OCing the quad up to a higher clock.
Will do.
The money would be far better spent a faster GPU. So much so that if you haven't opened it I suggest you send it back and get a new GPU instead. The 8800 is slow by today's standards. The quad won't do much for your FPS.

New GPU and proper cooling for components. That's what I would suggest.
I don't think so, particularly if you took it to the higher end of its OC'ing ability (3.5-3.8). The E6750 would certainly last you until the 5850 eventually becomes too slow and you get a whole new system (by which time the 775 socket will almost certainly be dead, along with the Q9550).
if your gonna go with a q9550 your better of going to i5
Which would mean a new motherboard and RAM. Better just make the 6750 last and get a new GPU.
