Experiencing graphic artifacts on many games. Is it worth it, or definitely time, to send it in to S

For those of you who don't know, artifacts are the stretching of graphics and overall glitches that happen when something isn't right with a graphics card or processor.
My 60GB PS3 has been experiencing artifacts for months now, along with lag in some games. When I play Hustle Kings for example, I get big black blotches on the screen that cover most of the game so I can't really play it. But they don't appear as soon as I start, they shorta show up randomly; I suppose that falls under artifacts as well though.
I actually popped it open a few days ago to clean out the dust as much as I could and there have been no improvements. Now I know that there must be damage to some of the hardware one way or another (not from cleaning it).
My PS3 is pretty much obviously out of warranty, so I know sending it in costs like $150. But I don't even know if it's at the point that Sony would just give me a new model (which I don't want because I want to play my PS2 games still), or if they will just repair it.
I've been playing in my attic for like 2 years now. It's unfinished, so all the more it experiences extremes in temps. I used to play in a room on the second floor of the house that was comfy and had much more moderate temps. But my Dad started using that room as an office room, so the TV and stuff got moved the attic. I've been bitching at my parents for a while to let me move back down, but they won't give. I have AC and a fan up there, but it only does so much really. I know the PS3 isn't SUPER sensitive to temps, but I'm sure prolonged exposure like what mine has likely been through affects it.
My HDD that I upgraded to like 2.5 years ago also has a little issue, but I don't think there's anything I can do about it other than buying a new one. It's also sorta separate from this I suppose. It doesn't let me download videos. It was fine for quite a while, but then one day my bro said all the vids were fucked up/gone, and vids could no longer be downloaded. My original 60GB one still lets me though.
Yeah send it in for fixing.
It is definitely worth it, as it's a very good indication that poop could be hitting the fan very soon.
