Iraq says it has received the first batch of fighter jets it ordered from Russia to help it as it fights an offensive by Sunni rebels.
Iraqi security officials said five second-hand Sukhoi attack aircraft would enter service within a few days, and that more were on their way.
The insurgents control large swathes of the north and west after a string of attacks over the past three weeks.
On Saturday, the government said it had retaken the northern city of Tikrit.
State television said 60 militants had been killed and that preparations were now being made to move north towards rebel-held Mosul.
Tikrit fell on 11 June to rebels of the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (Isis).
The rebels confirmed there had been heavy fighting in the city but implied the attack had failed, saying they were pursuing what was left of the army offensive.

They've probably been locked in a shed since World War II
pictured: Something completely unrelated to what they actually bought.

They bought Su-24's and Su-25's.
10 Su-24 and 5 Su-25 have been hastily moved from Russia to Iraq in the time span of a week. Pretty impressive in my opinion.
I agree with Nouri al-Maliki when he said the US is slow-rolling the sales of F-16s to Iraq. Whereas the American F-16s deal have dragged on for months and nothing has been delivered. The Su-25 was ordered just last week and was delivered a week later.

Slightly used.
if it flies and shoots, i guess its good enough against terrorists who lack planes lol.

Mind you the F16 deal was a contract for brand new F16's of what is probably the latest revision. They aren't exactly churned out in a couple days like your average passenger car. The key point to the Russian aircraft is they are used and need nothing but shipping.

That's quite the feat considering the SU25 first flew in '75.

made during ww2, locked in shed until 75, then put back in shed, now sold to Iraq
Very clever to buy jets that Saddam's air force flew back in the day, so they don't need to retrain pilots, just recall the old ones.

Look up the original deal. The delivery date isn't even until September of this year. They are exactly on schedule.

Obviously these are much newer jets and not at all WWII aircraft (though I don't think you meant that literally), but wonder if something like an IL-2 or a P-40 warhawk might be reasonably cost effective and logistically robust. Not necessarily those actual models, but a single engine prop driven modern attack aircraft.
Nice. Su-25's are sexy. They're the Russian version of the Warthog, except the main gun has 2 barrels, instead of 7.
Same amount of hardpoints too.
The only difference apart from the gun is it's speed, it's almost twice as fast.

Supposedly they still had pilots flying them during the US invasion in 2003 but then were phased out.
Now they're back

a10s and a10cs especially have much better avionics and stuff

Aren't the M models just as good?
Why are they giving it to the Iraqi army? Just give it to the Kurds, they will make more use of this stuff.

Plus, are the SU-25's as balls to the wall tough as A10's are?
Plus, are the SU-25's as balls to the wall tough as A10's are?
Nowhere near as tough as the A-10, something that Soviet pilots found out the hard way in Afghanistan.

Well, up until they changed their tactics.

The "kurds" are a number of different groups. Some of them are considered terrorists by Turkey, Iran and Iraq. Give them a weapon like that?
Lose any hope of having allies in the middle east and watch them fall into bad guys hands.

I doubt the Kurds have any operational airstrip

Su-25 are jets, the A-10c has turbofans.
Which means the Su-25 haemorrhages fuel.

I think fuel is the least of their worries.

Pretty sure they have a fine supply of fuel though

Meh they're just trying to lay blame on the U.S for being totally unprepared.
Also is the F-16's they get export models or something? Cause China was trying really hard a while back to acquire the engine technology for there own airplanes which inevitability failed and led them to use Russian made ones or something.

Its rather interesting that they have the Iraqi flag painted on the wings back it looks dusty and all banged up, nothing something you would expect to see after a fresh coat of paint. Maybe they sold them off to Russia and bought them back? :v:

They are buying brand new F-16s with all that comes with that (training, support etc) vs a bunch of second hand Russian jets that are sitting around waiting to be sold. I would hazard a guess that the Iraqis don't need training to fly the Russian jets based on what their airforce contains.
The US are not being slow, buying brand new high tech fighter jets isn't a fast process. If they had opted for second hand F-16s they would have had them ages ago.

I am surprised they didn't just dig up the ones that are buried, they might still work..
If they don't fall apart in the air, ISIS are gonna get fucked UP
ISIS is the most wealthy terrorist organization in the world, not to mention incredibly well trained, organized, and fucking insane. I'm sure they are more than able to shoot down a plane or two. These are definitely going to help, but they aren't going to instantly stop ISIS.

RIP to any captured pilots
