'Falklands poll is nothing but a publicity stunt': Argentina claims landmark referendum on whether islanders should stay British will be ignored worldwide

- Referendum on due to take place on March 10-11
- Will find out if the inhabitants of the islands want to remain British
- Vote comes as relations between Argentina and Britain worsen

Why bother? I already know the results: Falklands say, "uhm, why would we trade belonging to a country that can keep us safe and not ruin our economy for the shithole that is Argentina?"
So what the fuck do they want then?
So what the fuck do they want then?
They want their citizens to ignore all of the problems at home and focus on this pointless endeavour.

They want the Falklands to be given to Argentina in order to end British Colonialism - I can only assume that in keeping with the anti-colonialism mentality all European-descendant Argentinians will return to Spain.

An empty nation then, considering they slaughtered most of the natives.
Assholes, I have family on the Islands and they want to stay there, they've been there for 8 generations.
Didn't Britain colonise it first? I don't quite understand Argentina's claim to be perfectly honest. Is it just because the islands are close to Argentina, or did they get there first and we stole it from them?

" The first reliable sighting is usually attributed to the Dutch explorer Sebald de Weert in 1600, who named the archipelago the Sebald Islands, a name they bore on Dutch maps into the 19th century.[17]"

You know what that means, Dutchmen of Facepunch! You have the strongest claim!

They're not even particularly close to Argentina when you get down to it.
The only Argentinian thing on the Falklands are the illegal landmines they left behind. If the people on the Falklands want to stay with the UK, they should be able to.

you and france both settled it, the french gave the colony to spain under the buenos aires administration(prolly where argentina gets their initial claim). the british left(but maintained their claim), and argentina became a country and also settled the island and had claim to it.
eventually argentina lost claim to it somehow and the british took full control.

Britain once held the island for a few years, then abandoned it. Argentina later settled it. Argentina then held the islands for a few years after the Napoleonic Wars and then British forced them to leave the island.

Further reading has indicated that the British left for a time during WW(1?) but left a plaque to retain their claim. I really quite like that. A little plaque saying "brb -george v"
Untill Falklands gets a majority of Argentian population it is bullshit
I actually find this important because where I live we need to have the same votes every four years and that is very important to us because we want to have a voice and say if we want to be British or Spanish. Also if you don't know where I am referring to its Gibraltar.
Aw. These guys have the second biggest mouth of any government on Earth.

I'm not sure if the first you are referring to is Kim Jong Un or Ron Paul.
Yes because making a fuss over your claim to an island you haven't controlled since the early 19th century isn't a publicity stunt at all.

The argies have literally never owned those islands.
Argentina are just using it as a smokscreen for their much bigger problems. If Britain were to give them the islands, they'd come up with a reason not to just so they can keep complaining about it.

The British were the first people to create a permanent settlement there, after they took it from the Argentinians who did nothing with it. Over 150 years ago...
Why doesn't Argentina just send 3000 settlers if they want it that bad. Then they would have majority and thus win referendum?
I still think that Argentina has a weak claim to the islands, just that it's exaggerating their importance.
I still think that Argentina has a strong claim to the islands, just that it's exaggerating their importance.
I think its a politicial scapegoat, a successful scapegoat because it drives on nationalism.
I still think that Argentina has a strong claim to the islands, just that it's exaggerating their importance.
Its about as strong as your fashion sense.
If Argentina seriously wanted the islands, they would attempt to colonize it and send Argentinians there to live until they out numbered the Englishmen.
Its about as strong as your fashion sense.
This is oddly flattering.
Do remember that Argentina took over the islands for a few years and founded a small settlement (which was later taken over by the British).
At the time, the Argentinians had a very strong claim, although now it's considerably much weaker.
They were on the Island as Argentina for roughly a year as a penal settlement.

Wow, every four years? Surely that's a little excessive, that's more frequent than some elections in the UK.

because spain and the uk are always bickering over gibralter since it's a very strategic spot.
