(CNN) - Using his strongest language to date, Pope Francis told Italian Mafia members Saturday that they are excommunicated from the Catholic Church. “Those who in their life have gone along the evil ways, as in the case of the Mafia, they are not with God, they are excommunicated," Francis said. It is the first time a Pope has spoken of excommunication for the Mafia. Excommunication, which excludes Catholics from the church, can be imposed by church authorities or incurred automatically for certain grave offenses. The Pope’s remarks will resonate strongly in this part of southern Italy, where the Mafia attempt to portray themselves as upstanding religious men in good rapport with the Catholic Church, in order to maintain local credibility. During a one-day visit to Calabria, in southern Italy, the Pope denounced the local mafia, called ‘Ndrangheta, as an example of “the adoration of evil and contempt for the common good.”
That'll show 'em who's boss.
Aw shit, that's gonna upset some folks. Let's see what happens.

Totally. If any pope in history deserves to be a saint, it's Francis.
Saint Francis is sadly already taken.
Then we shall call him Sainto Francisco

There can be more than one saint with the same name, there's like eighty Saint John's

I think a lot of old people in tall hats and red robes would be against that. He's POTYAY, but I'm not sure the sainthood committee agree.
when you listen to fools, the mob rules
Mr. F only pities the fools
The Godfather III everyone.
I'm gonna become catholic now 'cause this guy fucking rocks.
It'll only make things worse for them if they assassinate him.
Hell even if the assassin weren't affiliated with any mafia, after this statement everyone would still think they had a hand in it.
If they hold on to their religious beliefs as strongly as they claim to it also still doesn't change the fact that the freaking pope himself denounced and excommunicated them from the faith.
Makes the whole thing hilarious and sad at the same time since everyone can say with almost absolutely certainty that there's going to be some people coming for him.

Speaking of which, how could anyone live with themselves knowing that they killed a religious figure such as the pope?
not too difficult when you're deranged, or a druggie
i bet he wakes up with a bishop's head in his bed

At least there's no cousin incest subplot this time.

Does away with a key protective measure, and then threatens a dangerous group
Pope Francis, that one with balls of steel

Not just that. He goes to their fucking turf and does it.
He went to fucking Calabria and criticized the Mafia. People have been killed for less there.
Just with this action he's showing he's got bigger balls than 99% of the population, goddamn.
pope francis is pretty damn popular, huh. i don't think people usually care this much about the pope outside of, you know, religious reasons.

The church separates them by their place of birth. For example, Saint Anthony of Padua.

Upset whom, exactly? The Italian "mob" in the traditional sense of the word doesn't exist anymore. Crime still happens but the all-powerful multi-millionaire Italians and Italian-Americans that ran some things in the 20th century don't exist anymore.
Most of the influential members of the mafia are either dead or in prison.
Like i've said before, no one would dare touch him because if they did they'd basically have the entire civilized world after them.

really? i was under the impression that mafias are very much alive and well in italy

The thing is, even if you aren't religious, what the pope supports, doesn't support, and his opinions can all possibly effect your life in some way. Just like how countries other than the US might be effected by the President we elect. So I'd sure as hell rather have an awesome pope like this even if I'm not catholic.
Balls of titanium
honestly, this guy makes me want to start going to a catholic church
this guy makes me want to dress up as jesus so he will take me out for a nice meal and then bring me back to his place in the vatican where he will gently caress my hair while sensual choir music plays from his cross-shaped ipod dock
I'm gonna become catholic now 'cause this guy fucking rocks.
Trust me, the internalised guilt and shame isn't worth it

As a catholic, I can attest to this.
