The theft happened on Friday at Tesco on Liverpool Road, Eccles, between midnight and 06:00 GMT, police said. The raiders tunnelled under nearby wasteland overnight and into the shop, where they stole cash boxes. They then escaped back through the tunnel. Police said they were looking for "people acting suspiciously, possibly covered in soil". Officers believe the thieves may have spent a number of months digging the tunnel because of the complex nature of its structure. Det Sgt Mark Toker, of Greater Manchester Police, said: "These people had obviously spent a long time plotting this crime and I doubt they would have been able to keep their plans secret for all that time, without telling others about their elaborate scheme." Police said they did not yet know if the incident was connected to a similar raid at Blockbuster in Fallowfield Shopping Precinct in January 2012. Raiders escaped with £6,000 after the raid that echoed a storyline from the Channel 4 show Shameless. Police believe that same gang carried out a similar raid in 2007. There have been no arrests in either case.
http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-manchester-26663093 The raiders tunnelled under nearby wasteland overnight Holy fuck that's determination. These are the bad type of criminal; the ones who plan everything and aren't stupid in the process of carrying it out, and don't tell the wrong people about their plans. This is why smart criminals are the worst kind. Unless one of them gets caught covered in dirt (User was banned for this post ("rules: don't quote the entire article" - Orkel))
this grain of soil is different from the rest of the local soil structure; you're under arrest!
This sounds like that one Sherlock Holmes story where they dupe a guy so they can build a tunnel from his house to a nearby bank. Trying to remember what it was called.
The Red-Headed League.
Yeah that was it. I read the crap out of SH when I was younger.
That's actually pretty fucking brilliant. Since it worked, anyway.
All this effort for one ATM? Wasted opportunity, even if it's a highly active ATM it's not worth it to waste all that time building a tunnel. [SP]I hope he gets caught though.[/SP]
It's been almost a week. If the thieves were smart enough to dig a tunnel under a goddamn ATM, they're smart enough to have washed the dirt off their bodies and either washed or burned the clothes they were wearing.
Ladies please.

Yeah, they do. Another reason why it's such a waste, since they aren't really filled over their capacity before being emptied he might as well managed to recover a small amount of cash from it instead of the jackpot.

Something similair happened in Germany , Berlin, 2013. Robbers dug a 30 meter long tunnel from a nearby garage they rented under a false name, broke into the vault and escaped with valueables worth around 10 million Euros. It took them several month to pull this off.
Don't they get emptied every day or so? I know the one at the supermarket I work at does.
ATM's don't get emptied when there's always potentially people that want to get money out. I don't think I've ever seen one being emptied
http://www.lanacion.com.ar/1232455-el-robo-al-banco-rio-de-acasuso-una-historia-de-pelicula For anyone who can read spanish, here in argentina robbers took hostages and fortified themselves in a bank, making stupid demands while they built an underground tunnel to the sewer system. From there, they took an inflatable boat with all the valuables they could take, and no one heard from them again.

an ATM can have as much as $700,000 when it's totally full. They hardly ever fill them past half full, even in busy areas, though. I'm pretty sure the company that manages the atms has software that tells them how much they should put in based on past usage(and outages) too. As far as crime to cash ratio, stealing an ATM is not a bad gig but you have to do your research and know when they fill it/how much will be in it or you end up planning for weeks and digging a fucking tunnel for $10,000 like these guys did. I mean, don't steal an ATM at all, but if you do, at least make it worth it.
They should call in the Argentine capo di tutti capi band who basically pulled some ocean's eleven shit...
It said on the BBC news that they escaped with ~£80,000
