At least 31 people have died and dozens others have been wounded after protesters attacked the headquarters of a powerful militia alliance in Libya's eastern city of Benghazi, a hospital official has said. Fighting erupted on Saturday after dozens of demonstrators stormed a base belonging to the Libya Shield brigade, a group of militias with roots in the rebel groups that fought in the country's 2011 civil war, They are tasked with maintaining security and are aligned with the Defence Ministry. The protesters were demanding that militias leave their camp and submit to the full authority of Libya's security forces.
http://www.aljazeera.com/news/middleeast/2013/06/201368183542755155.html EDIT: 31 Dead http://libya.tv/en/hospital-3-more-deaths-resulting-from-benghazi-clashes Thanks Smurfy
As terrible as this is, it's encouraging to see that the Libyan people want to preserve the stability of their country by protesting against the militias. It's really amazing to see a country like Libya making some much progress.

What a great thing to see the exact opposite has happened. They keep finding ways to make themselves better at every opportunity. Even some western countries could learn a thing or two about their progress in some ways.

It will be interesting to see the government's response. They've been pretty defensive of loyal militias like Libya Shield in the past, because there aren't many other options at this stage with the official security forces only just starting to be rebuilt. But they'll have to respond to this. As far as I can gather from Google's translation of [url=http://lana-news.ly/ara/news/view/24147/%D9%88%D8%B2%D8%A7%D8%B1%D8%A9_%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%AF%D8%A7%D8%AE%D9%84%D9%8A%D8%A9_%D8%AA%D9%86%D8%B9%D9%89_%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%A3%D8%B1%D9%88%D8%A7%D8%AD_%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%AA%D9%8A_%D9%81%D9%82%D8%AF%D8%AA_%D9%86%D8%AA%D9%8A%D8%AC%D8%A9_%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%A3%D8%AD%D8%AF%D8%A7%D8%AB_%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%85%D8%A4%D8%B3%D9%81%D8%A9_%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%AA%D9%8A_%D9%88%D9%82%D8%B9%D8%AA_%D9%81%D9%8A_%D8%A8%D9%86%D8%BA%D8%A7%D8%B2%D9%8A_%D9%88%D8%AA%D8%AF%D8%B9%D9%88_%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%AC%D9%85%D9%8A%D8%B9_%D8%A5%D9%84%D9%89_%D8%B6%D8%A8%D8%B7_%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%86%D9%81%D8%B3]this LANA article, the Interior Ministry is investigating the incident and will announce their findings as soon as they're done.
There are some more details out on this now. The death toll has now hit 31. It's still unclear who fired the first shot but there is apparently a possibility that someone in the crowd actually shot first. According to the Libya Herald, special forces troops were ultimately deployed to end the clashes (troops from the proper Libyan National Army, not another loyal militia) And the commander of the Libya Shield has apparently surrendered himself into army custody
