Can one use HDMI to transfer digital high definition video to a monitor whilst also using A/V from a device? For example, a Playstation 3 with HDMI connected to a television. Can you also take the A/V cable and route it to an external audio device, independent of the HDMI?
If I remember correctly. On the ps3, you can set the video options to use HDMI for video, and then you click on sound options and set sound from HDMI to A/V.

I don't know if you saw my other thread or not about getting a PS3 or Xbox, but I decided on the PS3 and I wanted to know before I made the final purchase. I appreciate your input.
I've had all three "next gen consoles" and while I love them all equally. When I first got my PS3, I used it more so than the rest. It was great that the PS3 could be made into a media center, blu-ray player, and used for games. I pretty much had folders for everything. In videos, I had a folder for my converted movies, music videos, and etc. Music was filled with pretty much what my ipod had. It is a very decent console, as is then Xbox, but from reading your other thread, it looks like a PS3 is more towards what you are wanting.
I can confirm that, you can definitly set audio and video output independently. I take it you want to use your computer monitor with speakers for the PS3?
