• Anyways to make cough medicine go down easier?

As the title says. Whenever I take cough medicine (my mind is already trained to do this due to some unfortunate events when I was a kid) I will gag so badly that my eyes will water and I will nearly throw up anything I ate beforehand like someone just shoved their hand down my throat. I was never one for bitter tastes and medicine takes the cake in my opinion. Is there anyway to mask the taste or at least make it not taste so awful? It's a cough syrup so I have to drink it. Honestly I'd rather they inject me with something with a needle (and I hate needles) than having to force myself to drink something I know I'm going to gag on.
You could always use [t]http://www.emergenc.com/sites/www.emergenc.com/files/EmergenC_OriginalFormula_Planet-DragonFruit_cupAndPacket_mini.jpg[/t] and combine it with a full glass of water that stuff is amazing too, and it'll go VERY well with the medicine to help you. You can also use half if it for day and other half for night. [editline]1st April 2015[/editline] personally I actually love the taste of cough medicine. You just down it instantly and get it done with. If there is aftertaste I guess you could do Listerine swishing as well
Dilute it with some water maybe?
you could smear some honey on top of the pill. This is what I used to do before I got used to taking tablets, though I don't have any great love for large pills even to this day.

I probably should've mentioned that this is a cough syrup and not a pill. A pill is easy enough cause I can shove it to the back of my throat before I swallow it avoiding the tongue completely. Can't do that with the liquid. [editline]1st April 2015[/editline]
You just down it instantly and get it done with. My body doesn't let me down it instantly because the moment it touches my tongue I go into gag mode.
There's that saying that a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down or something. Maybe adding some sweetness to it will make it less awful, or just watering it down will be enough.
strange, most cough syrups that I know of usually have a fairly pleasant taste. Even the linctuses. Try to keep some water or a pinch of sugar/spoon of honey on hand to use immediately after you down the syrup, it should honestly go down with little trouble if you try not to focus on what it tastes like too much.
have you tried different medicine? is it dayquil? maybe if you dilute it enough with something really strong (I think a large cup of cranberry juice would work best) maybe it'll overpower it cranberry juice has a nice strong sticky taste, then again it could make you instantly vomit :v: worth a try. [editline]1st April 2015[/editline] additionally, pomegranate juice [t]https://www.drfuhrman.com/images/Misc/Pomegranate_Image.png[/t] or just seeds are pretty strong. You could put it in a bottle of juice from that. it also doesn't taste as sour as cranberries. I would ask a super market for strong tasting fruits to help you. or perhaps you could take it rectally? (ok lol obviously not that's dumb)

(ok lol obviously not that's dumb)
It's not dayquil, no. I've tried Vicks, Triaminic, and some other cough syrups and they always have this same, bitter, disgusting taste. Obviously it varies from person to person as some people can down it with no problem (basically everyone I've ever met) but I cannot.
I usually just hold my nose while taking something and quickly try to drink something really strong afterward to dilute it
I usually just hold my nose while taking something and quickly try to drink something really strong afterward to dilute it
there is also smelling something to try and change the flavor but I'm getting the feeling it isn't the flavor entirely but an instinctive reaction one thing I would try is to hold as much of the cough medicine as I can in my mouth and try repress gagging as much as possible to try and 'get used to it' by force (But I don't think you want to puke so please don't do that)
Am i the only one who feels like cough medicine does nothing?

After your fit of coughing is done, you'll end up feeling very miserable with a sore throat for a few hours afterward at least, and be unable to ingest anything save a few sips of water without gagging again until it passes. [editline]1st April 2015[/editline]
Am i the only one who feels like cough medicine does nothing?
medicines work differently for different people. Also the right medicines have to be prescribed for the right job, empirical treatment only tends to go so far.
I used to get a mouth full of peanut butter and kinda coat my mouth with it. The smell of cough syrup makes me gag, and it seemed to counter most of the taste, followed by a quick wash down.
Almost all over the counter cough medicines that come in syrup form also have a pill alternative or even a dissolvable tablet if you're lucky. What exactly are you treating here? If it's prescription I know at least CVS has a syrup they can add to your medicine to make it taste good. :v: If your life depends on it holding your nose works or simply breathe out your nose whilst chugging the syrup.
