The Chinese government has recently blocked access to sites such as Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter, which are the “roots” of the internet. Then internet users in the country have started to use private networks and VPNs, as a solution to bypass the restriction But the Chinese government, which has not yet spoken the last word, has finally thrown out the step that internet users are afraid of. From this week, VPN use in China is now forbidden. Now VPN use and access to the internet via private cable connections will not be possible without an approval from the Chinese government.
http://hardavenue.com/using-vpn-in-china-is-now-officialy-a-crime/ Feels an awful lot like something you could use for propaganda.
Needless to say, I don't see them handing out many permits.
This will drive out a lot of foreigners who used VPNs to at least keep the place tolerable.
This has actually affected me at work because my company has a division in China and I tried to share engineering information & instructions via Youtube and couldn't. It's crazy how different things are over there.
Wew, just in time for my semester in China to finish. It will definitely affect tourism and academic programs, but big companies who use vpn for security, not to browse cat pictures on Facebook, will be affected really heavily. This is a very bad move, and if it doesn't get reverted, the Chinese economy will suffer. Considering the nature of vpn, if you consider going to China, you might want to set up your own in your house, instead of relying on popular programs. [editline]25th January 2017[/editline] HK people should start getting afraid. Their position of a powerful business economy might be ignored by prc when they decide to abandon all illusions and the idea of two states. The ban of vpns shows that prc decided that it wants to project its power more than to keep a stable economy. Not a good sign - since prc does have an issue with insecurities.
Uhhh all 3 of these sites have been blocked for a very long time
