Following a tour of Louisiana and areas on the Gulf of Mexico afflicted by massive underwater leaks from oil pipelines, the president vowed to commit all the resources necessary to contain and clean up the environmental disaster. "I think the American people are now aware -- certainly the folks down in the Gulf are aware -- that we are dealing with a massive and potentially unprecedented environmental disaster," Obama said in remarks following a tour of areas in Louisiana. "And while we have prepared and reacted aggressively, I'm not going to rest and none of the gentlemen and women who are here are going to be satisfied until the leak is stopped at the source, the oil on the Gulf is contained and cleaned up, and the people of this region are able to go back to their lives and livelihoods." The leak was a result of an explosion at an offshore drilling rig owned by BP last month, which sunk the drilling platform and sprung three leaks. Obama said Sunday that it would still be days before the leaks might be contained, but that he expects BP to pick up its expenses for the clean-up, which may come on top of any environmental or civil penalties the company may face down the line as a result of the spill. "Let me be clear: BP is responsible for this leak. BP will be paying the bill," Obama said. "But as president of the United States, I'm going to spare no effort to respond to this crisis for as long as it continues. And we will spare no resource to clean up whatever damage is caused." "And while there will be time to fully investigate what happened on that rig and hold responsible parties accountable, our focus now is on a fully coordinated, relentless response effort to stop the leak and prevent more damage to the Gulf," he added. Obama toured the areas with Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal (R), and met with EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson and Coast Guard Commandant Admiral Thad Allen, who was picked to coordinate response efforts, along with other officials during a tour of the area this afternoon. inb4 bp prices going up once more :3:
Why do we still waste Oil as a fuel? Wouldn't Hydrogen or Fission be more efficient and you could sell more of it and make more money?
Yes, it would, but than you would have to replace every car in the world.
And the oil companys will bribe all the car people to still make oil cars
Bet that $500,000 overflow shutoff equipment still looks "too expensive", eh?
Great, now gas prices will be even worse.
Well, it is their fault. Sounds reasonable that they should pay for their error.
Why do we still waste Oil as a fuel? Wouldn't Hydrogen or Fission be more efficient and you could sell more of it and make more money?
Because oil is big money and those who make that big money spend big money to make sure they keep making big money.
Well, it is their fault. Sounds reasonable that they should pay for their error.
Indeed it is, but plenty of people will still argue that you shouldn't punish them because it will raise petrol prices and the working class can't handle that. Then complain because he wastefully spent too much money on cleaning up the spill.

Of course by "BP pays everything" he means "BP's profits continue to set records while gas gets hiked to $4 to cover the cost."
Yes, it would, but than you would have to replace every car in the world.
People still think nuclear power is dangerous :bravo:

This is one of the few things I can agree with Obama on. The whole point of a free market is that you pay for your mistakes. At least he isn't bailing them out like he did everyone else. :colbert: [editline]10:29PM[/editline]
Of course by "BP pays everything" he means "BP's profits continue to set records while gas gets hiked to $4 to cover the cost."
That's not going to work assuming BP isn't colluding with the other oil companies. If BP gas i $4 a gallon, but it's $3 a gallon at the Shell station, nobody is going to go to BP.
Why do we still waste Oil as a fuel? Wouldn't Hydrogen or Fission be more efficient and you could sell more of it and make more money?
Because we still have about 100 years of oil left, and it's very easy to get.
Because we still have about 100 years of oil left, and it's very easy to get.
Civilization obviously doesn't think very far ahead. All of this "dohoho, this won't happen in my lifetime, keep drilling" from some people shows what selfish, narrow-minded dicks they are.
The price at the grocery is going to skyrocket too. Shrimp and other stuff like that is going to be so high.
So what would happen if BP refused...or went under. Everyone relies so heavily on them and the oil industry.
How can an AMERICAN president tell a BRITISH company what to do?
Cause he's da baws
How can an AMERICAN president tell a BRITISH company what to do?
They're operating in the United States.
Yes, it would, but than you would have to replace every car in the world.
And every gasstation would have to adapt.
Funny, we are going to make them pay for the spill, but they are going to hike up gas prices in response.
Aren’t US petrol prices still half the rest of the world anyway? [editline]10:21AM[/editline] Yep you guys need your prices to go up- http://money.cnn.com/pf/features/lists/global_gasprices/

Thanks to small towns in the middle of the country, where you have to drive ten miles to go shopping, then ten miles to the next store, then ten miles back home. In the end we probably pay more overall.
Why do we still waste Oil as a fuel? Wouldn't Hydrogen or Fission be more efficient and you could sell more of it and make more money?
Oil lobbies. Also, why shouldn't they have to pay for it? It's their rig that exploded, and they didn't have the correct counter measures to stop this massive spill. It's BP's fault.
this is going to make Exxon Valdez look like a Car with an oil leak.
Oil lobbies. Also, why shouldn't they have to pay for it?
1x Agree They built the rig They drilled the well They Didn't Install the proper safety Equipment It exploded spilling countless gallons of oil into the sea Their fault They pay.
Yeah, it's their fault but it also stands that BP will raise their prices meaning that the american people end up paying for it anyway.
Yeah, it's their fault but it also stands that BP will raise their prices meaning that the american people end up paying for it anyway.
No, there are other oil companies. Meaning if bp raises their prices people will buy gas somewhere else. Like Exxon. Of course that's what bp would like you to think though.

I remember over here when Esso had to rise the prices by a few pence, everyone else did too even though there was no reason to.
