Hey guys, I've been working on a game for about ten months now, and I'm finally getting around to the graphics. Since I'm rather busy with the coding/gameplay, and I'd like to start updating it faster than I have been, I'm looking for some help with the art.
The game is... kind of hard to describe. It's a relatively standard RPG, gameplay-wise. I've got ideas for neat open-world gameplay ideas later on, but for now it's pretty much common RPG fare.
The setting, though, is where it gets weird. The only short way to describe it would be "computer history retold as a fantasy story". Characters are (mostly) based on important computer scientists, programmers or businessmen; equipment is based on computer hardware. There's a lot of hidden references to other stuff as well, but, at least on the surface, it's regular swords-and-sworcery fantasy.
The game thread is here, if you want to check it out. Be aware that the current release is pretty "ugly" - it's an all-text game, command-line, like something from 1976. I've been focusing on the gameplay over the graphics, but now that the gameplay is fairly solid, I think I can begin work on the visuals.
I'm planning to do everything using basic sprites, for two reasons. One, it fits the old-school style of the game. Second, it's the only plausible way to make graphics for all the stuff in the game. There's already thousands of items and hundreds of enemies; it will, eventually, be a pretty massive game. Full 3D, or even just fully-drawn 2D, would be too much work.
I'm not looking for too much right now, though. It needs to start small. My plan for the current in-progress version only calls for 15 sprites (with four frames each), and I'm only aiming for a release by November. Honestly, I could probably pull it off myself, but, also honestly, I wouldn't do it that well. I'm just not that good at spriting.
As such, I'm probably going to leave a lot of the artistic decisions to the artists. The only things I've figured out are the rough sprite dimensions, and that mostly consisted of looking at old games' spritesheets, and seeing which best fit my UI mockup.
I already have one person interested in helping, but he's even less confident in his skills than I am. He's volunteered for the "boring, repetitive" work like making recolor variants, but he doesn't feel up to (and doesn't have time for) doing more original stuff.
So, if you're even interested in this, feel free to PM me, or shoot me an email at makerofthegames@gmail.com. Or hell, just post a reply.
PS: Apologies if this is the wrong section - I didn't see any rules against recruiting threads, and I figured I'd get a better response here than in the CC, or elsewhere.
Wait a minute, but why MS Paint?
Couldn't you just announce you needed helpers in your game's thread aswell?

Well, it's going to be sprites. I looked around in CC, didn't find anyone doing that sort of thing. MS Paint's the only place I saw any of that.
And I did ask in the game's thread. Got one person who says he can't do serious stuff, just the simple repetitive stuff.

You could edit the OP with that to get more attention (from smart people who actually read threads from the beginning) with big letters.
If you have friends who like to do sprite art, or art using MS Paint at all, you could ask them too.

I'll do that, but the game's thread is kind of in the wrong place too - it doesn't get many readers, and most of them would be better suited towards helping with the programming than the art.
Besides, it can't hurt to ask directly in the artists' area, right?

You could make a new thread in the General Games Discussion, it gets more views that way, make sure to put loads of interesting content to keep people interested, and to prove that you actually do stuff. Keep the developing journal in the Hardware & Software board.
Asking for help in MS Paint wasn't at all a good idea since this board hasn't been too popular these days.
whats it goona be called?

Right now, it doesn't have a "final" name. I've named it "Project Horizon", but that's literally a random and meaningless name. I'll give it a final one when it gets closer to completion - no sense making up a name that ends up having little to do with the game.
