How can you tell if hardware is burnt out or old? Specifically a DVD-R

So I found an old dvd-r player for my computer at a garage sale the other day from a friend. I was wondering if there's a way to tell if it's burnt out or old and unusable before I installed it. Thanks.

Smell it, if you smell smoke it is burnt. Another way to tell, is to unscrew it and look inside. Just ask the guy permission first.
Throw it against a wall. If it explodes buy that shit.
Ok I already have it in my possession, I forgot to mention I bought it but thanks for the advice

Any other helpful answers?
Not really a way to do that without installing it other than just looking at it and smelling it. Just plug it in and see if it will read a dvd.
