Jones tweeted early Wednesday that Mute, set in Berlin 40 years in the future, will begin filming next week. Jones worked for more than 12 years to get the project off the ground and said over the years that it will be connected to his 2009 debut feature Moon. On Wednesday, Jones confirmed that was still the case, telling a Twitter user Mute was related to Moon," which starred Sam Rockwell as a man living and working alone on the Moon.
Mute stars Alexander Skarsgard as a mute bartender who goes on a journey into the underbelly of the city and encounters a pair of American surgeons, one of which is played by Paul Rudd. Jones penned the script alongside Mike Johnson.
Jones has previously said Rockwell would have a small part on the film, which will be the second in a trilogy that began with Moon, one of the most well-reguarded sci-fi films of the millennium so far.
He has been talking about this Moon universe 'trilogy' since the first film came out, but I assumed he'd abandoned it and moved on to bigger things. Great to hear it is really happening.
I felt Moon stood up on its own, but interested to see what he'll do with it.
Working towards it for 12 years. That's serious dedication
Had no idea he was planning a trilogy. Moon is a fantastic movie so colour me interested.
Moon was awesome, this looks cyberpunk as fuck, I'm sold
I doubt it's going to be related to Moon other than the general aesthetic. Moon took place in 2035, and if "40 years from now" means 2055 or thereabouts, there might be some themes of aftershock from [sp]Sam Bell's return to Earth[/sp] but other than that I don't really see it being an actual sequel. Maybe [sp]cloning[/sp] becomes more prevalent in the future?
I wonder if the Korean still run everything because I really liked that aspect for some reason.
Probably. I wonder how or if [sp]cloning[/sp] will play into the story.
Moon was great, I need to rewatch it. I definitely remember sequel talks after moon came out, and I'm glad that news didn't just dissipate into thin air. Excited for this.
I'm not sure how they'd connect the two, Unless he's like a mass market disposable clone like cloud atlas.

Hopefully it'll be better than boyhood :v:
Moon was such a great movie. I'd be more than happy to see anybody make movies of that quality, let alone Jones himself.

[Sp]Well, the whole reason for the mission in the first place is a narative, Earth is running out of oil, perhaps 15 years on, if we assume that the lunar mission / base was shut down (the clone caused the company running it to lose all their stock when he testified against them on earth during the end credits) and no one took over, earth could be in a really shit state, perhaps so shit in fact that maybe people have warmed up to the idea of using clones when previously they apparantly were not[/Sp]

Maybe [sp]his clones keep trying to return to earth for some 20 more years[/sp]

I wouldn't be happy about a sequel, but a film set in the same world would be awesome.

wouldnt that just lead to the government just running the base themselves?
Well I'll go watch it. I enjoyed Moon and I wonder how they're going to handle robots and AI in this.

Did you know Boyhood took 12 years to make?
Moon is one of my favourite movies ever, I'm looking forward to this. I hope it's something like how Portal fits into the Half-Life universe: an otherwise standalone story that references some elements in the universe.
i had lost all hope for him continuing the trilogy or making a moon related movie after it was announced he was making Warcraft so im really happy atm

I've been following this project for ages, and even tho I can't find the article again, I distinctly remember an interview where he said that if anything we'd just be getting some closure on where Copley's character ended up after the events of moon. It wouldn't be the focus of the film as this trilogy is only loosely connected in that it's a shared universe. So maybe it'd be like an interview on a tv in the background or something while this film revolves around an entirely separate story.
but again I'm trying to remember something I read like five years ago so idk for sure. I'll see if I can't find it
