[UK] Police arresting nine people a day in fight against web trolls
32 replies, posted
Nine people a day are being arrested for posting allegedly offensive messages online as police step up their campaign to combat social media hate speech.More than 3,300 people were detained and questioned last year over so-called trolling on social media and other online forums, a rise of nearly 50 per cent in two years, according to figures obtained by The Times.
About half of the investigations were dropped before prosecutions were brought, however, leading to criticism from civil liberties campaigners that the authorities are over-policing the internet and threatening free speech.

Arrests are expected to rise after Amber Rudd, the home secretary, last week announced a national police hub to crack down on hateful material online.

In some areas, this is up almost 900 percent from 2014.
But what are they saying? I'm not seeing anything about what they actually said.
Also 'The Times'

Can someone with a Times account post a cap of the full article?
What a waste of police time.
Oh no, Jesse's dad is gonna backtrace my IP and send it to the cyber police
They cant troll you if there arrested, tails
Is this what an :idiotcull: looks like in real life?
But seriously, this is getting to be some Orwellian tier shit right there depending on what people are being arrested for saying. If it's not for blatantly harassing someone, then the police/government shouldn't be involved.

Yep, just turn your computer or whatever off and go for a nice little walk to clear the special snowflake syndrome they are suffering from.
"they wer mean 2 me" is not a valid excuse for 3,000+ arrests. Doxing I think yeah, that is justifiable but a little bit of trolling? Youtube is doomed.

That's likely not what this is about.
Yeh I've seen some pieces on TV regarding this. It's usually clamping down on anyone that has an online presence saying negative things about immigration, in particular Muslims and refugees.
The government don't want it to spark a violent reaction from the other side.

This is more understandable.

Someone was arrested for teaching his dog to nazi salute as a joke, so, it's pretty obviously nothing to do with harassment.

I hope the government learns that these issues aren't something they can help with. It needs to be dealt with at a societal level, until of course it becomes violent or particularily abusive.
Since social media has been around we have been pretty good at self regulating these things in the UK all round.

Hurray for thought crimes :v:
So what you are telling me is that the police have time to arrest people for writing shitposts on Facebook about Muslims but they dont have time to deal with the fuckwits that kept robbing my boyfriends store and threatening employees.
Huh.

I dont see how that'd help. If anything I would argue it'd validate their views further; for them now being persecuted for holding such ideals.

Story of my life, I worked retail security for 3 years dealing with violent smack heads, the SAME ones every other day robbing my shops and stealing shit and the police would never bother turning up, yet they have the time and resources to arrest people for 'mean posts'...

Yeah it's causing alot of issues as the one's that are being spoken about by the people are being sushed up by the Government leaving people feeling hopeless and uncared about, especialy those caught in high Muslim majority communities. So now we have organizations such as the EDL and Britain first popping up, there's a reason why Britain First is called what it is.
It's a symptom of restriction of speech on one side and one side only.

Nope
Britain First and EDL aren't just "popping up" they're the latest iteration in a long line of British Far right. Before them it was National Front and Combat 18. They'll use any reason to harass ethnic minorities, only now they use "anti-islam" as their justification - because being a nazi and/or bullying people for having a different skin colour really doesn't go down as well as it used to.
The Britain First clowns literally want a religious war, they're racists (don't pretend their thugs only target muslims) first, religious extremists second, then Britain sometime after that (after all the crusader imagery, civil disturbance and general dickishness). You have a very odd habit of glorifying what are essentially hate groups.

You have a very odd habit of treating symptoms as the sickness.
I don't care for these people, they make lots of noise but they ain't shit compared to the actual problem. Which is social and cultural tension in the UK.
You don't solve that problem by putting people in prison or fine those who talk (or shout) about the issue at hand. It's open discussion from both sides that's needed.
I get what the police are trying to do but it's slapping a bandage on a cracking dam.

Perhaps it was because 'National front' was already taken?
And the EDL?
The EDL are nothing more than racist thugs, I live in an area where it's noticeably rare to bump into someone who isn't white. The only mosque I know of is a tiny nondescript building that isn't even detached from the hardware store beside it.
It's not a case of ~rising tensions suffered by a chafing minority of non-Muslims!~ it's about simple racism. Proven by the fact that, With only a few black/brown people to harass, the local EDL gang has started showing up at the workplaces of white people they find sticking up for minorities on facebook, Intimidating them or trying to get them fired by causing scenes, instead.

Absolutely no argument there, all of these groups are just racist thugs. Which is a shame because they get all the media attention and makes the problem of rising tensions and quite honestly, fear, from the non-muslim community in Muslim areas (Jews being threatened to be fire bombed out of their houses and such) seem like a moot issue in comparison.
So unfortunately all they are doing is making the more extremist (and I don't mean terrorist level) Muslims and their ways have a corner to hide out of the public spotlight, because you are racist and associated with these national fronts if you confront their ideologies. It absolutely works in their favor.
Unfortunately the police action, as this thread points toward, also assists in this on both sides. It pisses off local communities giving more rise to these EDL and BF types who now suddenly have MORE propaganda to spill out onto the streets and social media, because now they can claim to be the only defense against whatever it is they hate at the time.
It's a hard case of separating the 2 and finding the truth somewhere in the middle.
Police should be arresting real trolls, the ones in the hills kidnapping babies for their dinner.

Would be a more better way to spend their time then that shazz

You know I'm the first person to think that this shite is wank but your argument is literally "Doesn't arresting Nazis make you the real Nazi?"
You know I'm the first person to think that this shite is wank but your argument is literally "Doesn't arresting Nazis make you the real Nazi?"
It's not arresting pieces of shit who step out of line and call violence down upon others. Unfortunately this is rarely the case, if you want to incite death or violence on anyone then absolutely fucking go to prison.
I'm just mentioning the fact that we live in a nanny state and feelings are important :*(
EDIT: I think the nazi dog video speaks for itself, it's not oppression, it's simply stupid policing.
It's also worth noting that less internet aware influential people use the phrase "trolling" to describe everything from posting mean things on facebook to organising hate groups and making literal death-threats alongside real-life stalking and harassment.
Wouldn't surprise me if someone was trying to deliberately muddy the definition in order to make it easier to crack down on people expressing politically inconvenient opinions online.

These people are racists; their motivation, like the motivation of similar groups like c18 before them, is racism.
What is the sickness if not racism?
Open discussion? I'm impressed by your unwavering faith in humanity, I wonder of you extend the same generous spirit toward Muslim hate preachers and "white people are trash" tumblr clowns.
People are easily manipulated, our first, strongest and sometimes only reaction is with the amygdala, the panicing irrational part of the brain.
You let these hate groups speak and they'll appeal to the amygdala, they'll threaten people "those people are taking YOUR JOBS and raping YOUR KIDS" people then see that kids do get abused and that they are struggling for work and put 2 and 2 together to get 88.
Their arguments appeal to that first and strongest reaction and people are easily convinced. Then to go along, convince them they've been duped and get them to discard preconceived notions and engage the logic part of of the brain is no simple task.
Especially difficult when the groups foster distrust of any other sources of information "fake news!", shame members from questioning (a guy I know is called "anti" by his brother coz his brothers friends think he's anti British for being not racist). These groups also have a load of bogus stats and out of context studies to throw at you, some being completely false, so addressing their arguments means addressing all that bs. It becomes a war of attrition which you've already lost because they'll live in cognative dissonance to protect their fragile egos. "I'm not wrong, the world is wrong"
The police should not be arresting YouTube jokers but freedom of speech should have limits. If someone is preaching hate then shut em down, if that preaching becomes practicing (like edl and Britain first physically attacking people and invading property) then lock them the fuck away.
Absolutely agree with everything, of course.
I think we care deeply about 2 opposite sides of the same coin. I completely understand you argument that if we let this kind of thinking and behavior go unchecked, it can spread like a disease and all of a sudden we have a fascist party in power as the populace grows accustomed to these views. It's something we have to be careful of.
But we can't sweep the issues that some of these groups are currently weaponizing under the rug, which is what is currently happening, these groups make the news all the time, it's plastered everywhere, which is great, and it shows we won't tolerate it (or it tries to show that at least), however it has it's negative consequences.
To seem like we are not in league with this, the Government appears to be somewhat giving free reign to alot of the mosques that have been CAUGHT giving hate speech out like it's candy, with nothing more than a slap on the wrist and a don't do it again, which just won't work at all. It's also plastering the TV with news snips about the EDL an BF which of course many Muslims all over the country are seeing, and it effects them alot more than it effects us, I can't imagine seeing this on the TV if I were to be in that community, I can imagine it to be quite divisive in itself (I'm not saying it shouldn't be aired, my point is everything should be aired).
My main fear for me is not these small time national front guys for now, but for what it could grow into if indeed the issue is not addressed on a fair national media level. We need to drag extremism wherever we find it into the spotlight and shame the fuck out of it collectively as a culture, no matter our religion.
Currently our government only celebrates when it finds someone in the act of planning a terrorist attack, but spreading this poisonous and barbaric ideology that is the Saudi Wahhabism on an entire European level seems to be flying under the radar, and there are very very few moderate Muslims standing out against it, instead their arguement seems to be "We're not all the same", which is fine, I get that, but we need their help more than anyones and even the Mayor of London doesn't appear to give a flying fuck about it.
If the problem tips heavily on either my side or yours, Europe is going to see widespread violence all over the place in an Islam vs everyone else clusterfuck, the whole thing is a ticking time bomb and we are seeing evidence of this popping up all over the place everyday, just look at what is happening in Sweden, Poland and Austria at this very moment, France and Germany have changed forever.

In general, internet legislation in the UK/EU seems extremely strange and dated to me.
Your 'Cookie' Law is an obvious example.
