• Microsoft reportedly working to block apps that re-enable the Windows 8 Start button

Microsoft appears to be taking steps to remove legacy code from its Windows 8 operating system that will prevent modifications and hacks to re-enable the Start button and Start Menu. Windows watcher Paul Thurrott reports that the company has been "furiously ripping out" legacy code in Windows 8 recently that lets third parties bring back the Start button, Start Menu, and other legacy parts of the desktop interface. Thurrott claims that several well-known UI hacks that enabled the Start Button in the Consumer Preview do not work on the Release Preview. Despite a growing debate over Metro on desktop PCs, Microsoft doesn't appear to be willing to offer a choice of traditional desktop or Metro with its upcoming Windows 8 release, opting to continue to fuse the pair together. Thurrott claims there will not be an option to boot directly into the desktop for business or power users, and that Windows Server 12 will also boot into Metro. Microsoft's approach will anger some who prefer the traditional desktop over the new fullscreen Metro world, but the focus is on convincing developers to build Metro style apps. The Windows 8 Release Preview will debut today, where we're expecting to see some improvements for multi monitor setups and tweaks to some of the core Metro style applications, but Microsoft has already revealed that it plans to drop the Aero UI before RTM so there's clearly room for additional changes before the operating system ships later this year. You are already pissing people off with these changes to begin with, never mind forcing them onto everyone.
Just.. Why? Seriously. Are they seriously that idiotic that they fail to understand that we DON'T want the start button removed?
Fucking stupid. One more reason not to buy Windows 8. It's like they're purposely trying to create another Vista
What are they accomplishing by removing the start button anyway.
The average moron user will not even know how to re-enable the start menu, it isn't a big deal. Its the tiny percentage of people who actually know what they are doing that want this.
Seems like we might have some defectors to Linux! Join us!
If you could count the number of times I use the start button. Don't change something that works Microsoft!
That's dumb.
Just.. Why? Seriously. Are they seriously that idiotic that they fail to understand that we DON'T want the start button removed?
I have a really hard time figuring out the logic behind this. That people are working to re-enable the start button should be a clear sign that their customers want to use it. And Microsoft responds to that by removing the option completely?
What difference does it make to them? Why bother?
You people are taking this all too seriously. They're not being all FUCK YOU AND YOUR START BUTTON. It's not like they're doing this to stop you from re-enabling it, they're just cleaning up their code. I can't understand why everyone is such a crybaby about the start button being removed anyway. I used windows 8 for months and it's just a thing to get used to, it's not that bad at all.
Metro in its entirety does not BELONG on the desktop, it was designed for a fucking smartphone / MP3 player. Metro apps do not in one single bloody way enrich my desktop experience, they add NOTHING but the justification to pull shit like this.
Metro deserves to be on tablet pcs not desktop pcs i hope ms Realize what they have done when no one buys windows 8.
I for one, am not going to buy Windows 8 if they keep this metro shit as the only option.
it's not like there won't be third party ones developed sooooooooo idc
Windows Server booting into Metro too? What?
I wouldn't even pirate this
I am quite happy with Windows 7 and my big shiny Start button, thank you.
Just watch. Microsoft will release a update that gets rid of the 7 start button.
On the other hand I don't remember when I last started a program through the start button.
On the other hand I don't remember when I last started a program through the start button.
Even if you don't, the metro start menu opens up in a flash and you can still start writing a program name and press enter as soon as what you want is found to launch it. Don't see why it's so horrible.
Oh hey theverge...aka we hate anything microsoft with a passion and report stuff from unverified sources as fact about it. Also the wording of the article is directly inflamatory. It says as if microsoft was intentionally blocking the apps from exploiting something in the system to allow the start menu to run. What they are instead doing is removing old legacy code and fuctions who'se function is deprecated. Very big difference.
Windows 8 looks like something that would be on a smartphone, not a computer.

Seems like there's a tick-tock thing going on with Windows releases. There's a bad release which introduced a few good thing, but also A LOT of awful one's. After than one there's a release which fixes all the awful things introduced and the accompanying bugs. Repeat as necessary.
Seems like we might have some defectors to Linux! Join us!
Have fun with the whole programs and games compatibility thing. And no, Wine isn't your all mighty and savior on that point.
They stole the idea from GNOME 3 and Unity (Linux).
They didn't steal anything, they copied it.
On the other hand I don't remember when I last started a program through the start button.
I don't remember when I haven't. I rarely use my desktop for opening programs, I always just type in the application into the search bar and instantly open it.
On the other hand I don't remember when I last started a program through the start button.
I do. And when I last started Control Panel through Start. And My PC. And My Documents. Microsoft is being fucking retarded with Windows 8.
Let's go back to Windows 3.1 while we're at it.
I don't remember when I haven't. I rarely use my desktop for opening programs, I always just type in the application into the search bar and instantly open it.
I hate pinning programs to my taskbar, it makes it look like some kind of OSX dock clusterfuck. My start menu is used for everything, and my desktop icons are disabled to keep it tidy.
