So I've been with BT (British Telecommunications for you yanks) for a few years now, and I've been happy for the most part. However, that's probably because I used to be with PiPex, and two cups connected by bit of string is an internet solution preferable to PiPex. Basically I always assumed my slow download speeds were due to my old house being a pile of victorian shit, but now I've moved house and seen no difference whatsoever, while people I know are getting speeds of about five times mine, at half the cost.
I live in South East England, near London, and I'm currently paying about £40 a month for phone and unlimited "2mb" (yeah right, fucking BT) broadband, which has serious trouble connecting to Steam servers for some reason. Would like cheaper, faster internet. Do I really need unlimited usage? What ISPs have a good reputation? I hear Virgin Media are quite good, but I heard something else a while back saying that they monitor and restrict what sites you visit. I'm pretty lost, here.
In short: Good U.K Internet Service Providers?
Be.
Be.
Virgin Media :smug:
i'd go with Be, but if you want TV and landline and shit then virgin is p cool
10mb / virgin media XL thing / standard landline for £15 per month aint too shabby
Virgin Media are pretty good.
Got a really awesome ISP Provider here! "Telia"! That's in Sweden though! Just spreading the word!
aite, Be it is.
If you have an O2 phone, consider using O2 for internet.
It's basically like Be - it runs on the same lines at the same speeds. You just get better service and more customisability with Be.
But if you have an O2 phone - O2 internet is cheaper.

Unless you switch Technology, ie going to Virgin, you'll not see much or any speed increase on that phone-line, regardless of who you have as an ISP.
You'll be able to get different prices though.

well no that's wrong.
if you're on bt's 2mb package and you then move onto the be 24mb package with be then obviously you're going to get a faster internet connection as long as your line's going to support it.
I'm on TalkTalk, they provide landline and broadband for like £12 a month, cheap but not that fast, unfortunately my parents won't move to Be. as they offer a landline bundle too but at a more expensive cost.

BT don't offer packages based on Speed, They offer packages based on Usage allowance. If he's getting 2mb from BT, it's because his Phone Line supports 2mb.
If Be use LLU, then they might give him a better speed. But not 22mb/s better.
I use BE.

I get pretty good speed and they don't throttle anything. If you live in a rural area it's unlikely you'll be able to get BE because it's an LLU service.

that depends when you signed up. we're still on a 2mb package here.
Well you should ring in and see if they have anything else on offer every now and again, because companies are always rolling new shit out. They're offering 10gb a month, 20gb a month or unlimited packages at the moment. No speed limits. See if you can get a bargain of some sort.
Why are people disagreeing with Virgin? I was on NTL and then got changed to Virgin when they bought them and have since had nothing but good news. They upgraded me to 20meg broadband for free and then onto fibre optic, again for free. I have one of the fastest connections available in the country.

They're expensive and are known for being unreliable sometimes.
Be.
I wish my dad would sort ours out, we are on BT 8mb, but it's the most unreliable pile of crap ever.
I'd change it but it's all in my dad's name :/

Hardware and Software is a good ISP
Be, Virgin Media, Plusnet.
8Mbp/s isn't that bad. I know people on 127kb/s in the UK 24/7.
Virgin broadband kills your download speeds if you download more than a set amount during peak hours (it depends on which package you're on, on 10mb broadband I think it's 800 megabytes). Peak hours are between 4 and 9 I think. If you download more than this amount during this time your speeds are reduced to 2.5mb for 5 whole hours. Which makes gaming, watching youtube and iplayer a downright bitch (My Fakefactory Cinematic Mod 10 (I'll delete the Alyx models don't worry) download has been going for about 5 days now because my parents don't like leaving the pc on overnight and I have to download during peak hours). Other than that, the speeds are usually what they advertise, I get between 800 and 1200 kb/s for the most part, and it only occasionally dips below 500, and I live pretty far away from the local exchange. If you don't care about downloading huge files, then go with Virgin.
Be or o2 are your best bets.

In Sweden you can get free 100mb/s broadband in some places, stop rubbing it in our faces that we get slow speeds compared with the rest of the world. :smith:

You think you UKers have slow speeds the US is worse. I have 1.5 meg internet it sucks.
As everybody else said, Be is the best.
