A project like this would also be ethically and socially treacherous
How about instead of just throwing around statements like this they actually try to make a case for themselves? The critics are just saying "this is bad" and not elaborating on why that is.
i don't if it's just me but the concept of "building a baby" is hilarious
The baby in the article is so adorable
Who has the free time to sit around and think "Oh no, people will use this to create designer babies through sperm banks!"
Seriously, not only would that require a completely unhinged, detached, neurotic mother... Genetics don't tend to work in any predictable manner in the reproductive process. That's why you see kids who look nothing like their parents.
oh no its like shitty gattaca
"Don't like the baby we sent to you? No problem! Just wrap it up in the plastic bag provided and dump it in the nearest river!"
Wasn't this the plot to the last Max Headroom episode?
i want to have a designer baby some day my kid will be better than all the other kids
What happened to survival of the fittest?
The issue I've seen discussed in the past with the genetic manipulation of children is the inevitable disparity in the "quality" of individuals born into a society with it. Suddenly, people from different income levels show physical (or potentially mental) differences to an extent not seen theretofore.
I can't really take a side on the matter, but it's important to discuss the implications that a program like this could have if it were to advance. If it's just women looking to choose sperm donors for their children who will produce certain features there's not much that could go wrong.
My baby is broken, its not crying. How the fuck do I RMA it back?
sounds like something that would be a joke in a grand theft auto radio station.

actually didn't gta4 make that joke?
The dawn of übermensch is upon us.
Designer babies are creepy.
I'd use the knowledge we have to simply abort fetuses with abnormalities.
I know people are against this, but with enough research, couldn't babies be born from a test tube to be resistant to diseases and live a healthy life?

Babiesovernight.com
Yeah, they did.

in 2 weeks theyll come up with an update to the perfect baby and your baby will be obsolete
not if i opt for the 3g connnected baby and get over-the-air updates
I believe this belongs here

Nah because a lot of it will depend on your parenting. Sorry.
On the bright side, the fact that parents have more control over their kids might make them act like better parents, making brighter, happier, and nicer children.

actually with the way things are going, its easier to design a perfect kid than it is to get an abortion....not to mention the social stigma attached to anbortions here in the u.s. , believe me people would rather want to get it "right" the first time

that's eugics for you, but we know where that leads in the hands of crazy people, and that was even before we had the genetic tools to do any real damage, now we have the tools but not the will to do it. retrovirus immunisations and gene therapy are the most positive tools as they can be used on the child with consent and get around the whole "its against god" argument when we are simply fixing it after the fact
So it's basically eugenics.
How can it predict personality? Isn't that up to how you raise your kid?
I can't wait until we kill off the genetically engineered supermen in the Eugenics Wars so Star Trek can become real.
I don't see any problem with this. Then again I'm also of the opinion that children should be considered property of their parents and have no rights until they're about age 12, so perhaps I'm not the best person to ask.

I hope you're incapable of breeding.
It doesn't matter, it's going to be done either way, banning things straight away wont help anything, stuff like this needs proper regulation, also this is not that controversial, unlike genetic engineering.
Parents are already doing this but not in such a direct way, they use "tricks" that increase the chances of having a boy/girl, that is ok, but not this?
wtf
