Why LoL of all games?
LoL is pretty popular throughout the U.S.
I'm actually not surprised, you can get a scholarship for anything in our colleges here.
can i get a scholarship for spending unholy amounts of hours on farming simulator 2013
a varsity farming simulator team sounds like a good idea to me
While not games so to speak, I could see getting a scholarship for RPG Maker XP/VX or Game Maker seeing as those can teach minimal basic programming/at least teach something. THIS on the other hand, seems to be a thing because if you play League, you apparently considered an athlete. What the hell has the world come to?

I think it can be considered a sport and being an 'athlete'(but to the same degree as chess).
However, I don't get why anyone would want to be a 'pro gamer'. Most pro gamers are badly paid, only the very top percentage of players get a respectable income to live on.
Chances are very small you are going to reach that point and you are better off doing other things(for a job).

It's incredibly popular and there's tons of money and promotion involved I presume.

It's a once in a lifetime opportunity, a ton of people do it because they won't really be able to try again if they let it slip.

A lot of universities actually have real game design programs. Unfortunately, it's considered an art degree and they never actually have to take any computer science courses.
