Google is developing an open-source operating system called Chrome OS. The OS is designed specifically for web browsing. It will be out later this year and netbooks will be sold with it by the second half of 2010. http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2009/07/introducing-google-chrome-os.html
Introducing the Google Chrome OS 7/07/2009 09:37:00 PM It's been an exciting nine months since we launched the Google Chrome browser. Already, over 30 million people use it regularly. We designed Google Chrome for people who live on the web — searching for information, checking email, catching up on the news, shopping or just staying in touch with friends. However, the operating systems that browsers run on were designed in an era where there was no web. So today, we're announcing a new project that's a natural extension of Google Chrome — the Google Chrome Operating System. It's our attempt to re-think what operating systems should be. Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks. Later this year we will open-source its code, and netbooks running Google Chrome OS will be available for consumers in the second half of 2010. Because we're already talking to partners about the project, and we'll soon be working with the open source community, we wanted to share our vision now so everyone understands what we are trying to achieve. Speed, simplicity and security are the key aspects of Google Chrome OS. We're designing the OS to be fast and lightweight, to start up and get you onto the web in a few seconds. The user interface is minimal to stay out of your way, and most of the user experience takes place on the web. And as we did for the Google Chrome browser, we are going back to the basics and completely redesigning the underlying security architecture of the OS so that users don't have to deal with viruses, malware and security updates. It should just work. Google Chrome OS will run on both x86 as well as ARM chips and we are working with multiple OEMs to bring a number of netbooks to market next year. The software architecture is simple — Google Chrome running within a new windowing system on top of a Linux kernel. For application developers, the web is the platform. All web-based applications will automatically work and new applications can be written using your favorite web technologies. And of course, these apps will run not only on Google Chrome OS, but on any standards-based browser on Windows, Mac and Linux thereby giving developers the largest user base of any platform. Google Chrome OS is a new project, separate from Android. Android was designed from the beginning to work across a variety of devices from phones to set-top boxes to netbooks. Google Chrome OS is being created for people who spend most of their time on the web, and is being designed to power computers ranging from small netbooks to full-size desktop systems. While there are areas where Google Chrome OS and Android overlap, we believe choice will drive innovation for the benefit of everyone, including Google. We hear a lot from our users and their message is clear — computers need to get better. People want to get to their email instantly, without wasting time waiting for their computers to boot and browsers to start up. They want their computers to always run as fast as when they first bought them. They want their data to be accessible to them wherever they are and not have to worry about losing their computer or forgetting to back up files. Even more importantly, they don't want to spend hours configuring their computers to work with every new piece of hardware, or have to worry about constant software updates. And any time our users have a better computing experience, Google benefits as well by having happier users who are more likely to spend time on the Internet. We have a lot of work to do, and we're definitely going to need a lot of help from the open source community to accomplish this vision. We're excited for what's to come and we hope you are too. Stay tuned for more updates in the fall and have a great summer.
Why dont you post some info rather than just link us?
but i already hate the browser. if the os is anything like thqat, i hate it already. and what, no x64?
Working on adding details, bare with me. Especially with Facepunch timing out. [editline]08:16PM[/editline] So I guess I didn't make the first thread? I have 3 late ratings...

Why rate him late since no other FP'er made a thread about it?

I do like the browser a lot personally, but it needs a lot of work. This OS wouldn't interest me at home since I play PC games, like most people here. It would seem nice for netbooks perhaps, which I don't own. I know a lot of people will switch to it because they can't keep their computers from garbaging up so they start slowing down, which Chrome OS would be harder to garbage up I imagine. No interest to me really, since my internet is almost instant on my PC, but it's free so it's worth screwing around with.
From what it sounds like so far, it's pretty much going to be a super stripped down linux distro that boots into the web browser and does everything online with gears for offline stuff. Which will be cool for netbooks, but a waste for anything else. They say it will have ARM processor support, but you could just use android which is way better than just a web browser. Time will tell though. If it's a fully functional linux distro on par with ubuntu or fedora, I'll probably mess with it, but if it's just a bootable version of chrome, I'll pass.
Why do they need to make a new OS when they already have Android? :downs:
Why dont you post some info rather than just link us?
Why can't you just go to the link. The info is the same.
I may use this for my 2nd computer, All it's capable of is web surfing and Spore on Bare minimum settings, so I use it for the internet, probably going to replace it before that happens though
Google Chrome... OS? wtf is this shit. Google Chrome was shitty enough without it's own OS.
Chrome is awesome but a chrome based OS sounds fairly silly to me. Hey google - stick to android.
This will be good for my POS dell laptop. Its got a pentium 3 in it lol.
It's funny how everyone says: Chrome it teh shitz. and then as soon as anything new is announced every one is like: Chrome sux, tis will suck. because even if they haven't show anything yet it will suck. You guys are retards.

This was already posted...
As much as I like chrome, I don't think the OS is for me. Though I don't think it's aimed at me. It seems like it would work well at a strictly web only cafe (aka no games).
Sounds like a good OS to dual boot on a laptop. Use Windows when you're at home, just boot up Chrome when you're out just on the net in a cafe or whatever. Will be interesting to see what becomes of it, I've always thought (somewhat jokingly) that Google would make an OS. Wouldn't mind seeing it become a fully fledged but lightweight distro. Anything made by Google is likely to become popular, and Linux becoming popular would be a good thing.
They said they're designing it for netbooks. Not desktops or workstations. And it's more than likely going to be a fully operational OS, not just a web browser.
They said they're designing it for netbooks. Not desktops or workstations. And it's more than likely going to be a fully operational OS, not just a web browser.
what? no one here said it would be for desktops, and google themselves said it's gonna be like a mix between chrome and a simple OS, and features a new windows managing system. you didn't read the OP or any of the posts right?
Why rate him late since no other FP'er made a thread about it?
There's already a somewhat large thread about this in the news section of GD.

People keep saying it's gonna suck dicks and eat shit before they even show any info on it. Like you, I'll wait until it's released before I judge it. You didn't understand my post, right?

You didn't understand my post, right?
I never said anything bad about it, you said it's gonna be like a fully operational OS even tough google said it's not. And as they are designing it for notebooks there's no need for all the features that windows/OS X or the larger lunix distros have.
First picture leaks (supposedly) http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/09/first-google-chrome-os-screenshots-leaked/ Note that those could be fakes as well, but still nice to see. And the partners for ChromeOS (the big ones mentioned so far) According to chip.de (german, but reliable)

Looks fake.
but i already hate the browser. if the os is anything like thqat, i hate it already. and what, no x64?
Because netbooks can use a 64 bit OS right?
There's already a somewhat large thread about this in the news section of GD.
This is correct. I was trying to search for it but FP kept timing out and I didn't see it on page 1.
