Surprised no one has said Sunn.
I didn't like Sunn at first, but I am really getting into them now.
Ulrich Schnauss
This one by far.

Stars of the Lid Gas I sincerely think "Nah und Fern" by Gas is probably the single best collection of ambient music there is. 4 CDs of some of the finest music I've ever heard. Refinement of the Decline by Stars of the Lid is a very close second. But I also like other ambient groups. Global Communication in particular is another one I quite enjoy. Here are two of my favorite tracks by them, the second one is cut a minute and a half short. Also of interest: Aphex Twin (Selected Ambient Works)[beats and synth pads] William Basinski [Drone/super ambient] Loscil [subdued beats, mostly normal ambient] Lustmord [Dark ambient, I need to be in a certain mood to listen to his stuff] Murcof [Classical mixed in with ambient, glitch-beats, amazing music] (Rememberanza) Robert Rich [Earthy world ambient, lots of samples of rainforests and such] Oh shit, Tim Hecker! I completely forgot about this guy. His new album is fucking amazing. Definitely my favorite current ambient musician. I've been focusing more on hardcore ambient and have generally veered away from ambient-like subgeneres. If I took the term into a broader definition I would also include classic groups like The Orb and Future Sound of London or perhaps Tortoise if you felt like stretching the genre. But alas I'm sticking to the ambient ambience, not the techno jazz house or rock styled ambience. Also, props to the Robert, Aphex, Ulrich, and Brian mentions. I have SAW 85-92 by aphex, Dreamtime Return by Robert Rich, and Ambient 1: Music for Airports by Brian Eno in my vinyl collection. Great albums. I still need to nab some Ulrich Schnauss for my physical music collection. [editline]13th February 2011[/editline] Actually I just realized that Dreamtime Return is by Steve Roach, not Robert Rich. mah b
Does atmospheric black metal fall under ambient? I think it's rather ambient. If it does: Summoning.
Richard Wagner is fucking brilliant. Got all his songs on a mp3 player, listen to it erryday. Also this song by Johann Gottfried Piefke.

*snip* Deus ex ambient tracks (first mission, the ship full of the nano-virus containers, vandenburg base and area 51 underground).
Steve Roach, Dreamtime Return is a masterpiece.
