I want to take the insides of a crt monitor out, but from what Ive heard this can be really dangerous, the monitor has been unplugged for probably a year, but still, if I open that up, am I going to die?
It's going to release large amounts of poisonous dihydrogen monoxide gas. Be extremely cautious. Open the monitor in a well-ventilated area and make sure to wear a gas mask.
You won't die, just do it outside, and if you hear\smell something coming out, get the fuck away from it and let it all go out. I did this once, and it really isn't that interesting. I pulled one tube thing out and a SHITLOAD of gas shot at me, that was about it.
when I get the ray gun out and the lead screen, will the casing be safe to mess around with? No radioactivity/toxicity?
It should be pretty safe. [editline]04:56AM[/editline] Just don't go eating it. They put a lot of nasty heavy metals in CRTs.
really? I thought the casing was all plastic.

[editors note: This has been confirmed]
It should be safe. Just avoid touching the capacitors.
The capacitors can be dangerous.
My friend did this once, He attached some wires to a couple screws and created some kinda conductor with it. Just don't cross the streams!
If you have to ask on a forum, don't do it.
You know there's mercury, etc.? I'd resist the curiosity.

Does the monitor still work at all? Just be sure to release all the energy: Hook up a good screwdriver to the metal plate bit that encases the flyback transformer, and then touch the hook inside that red plug like thing. There should be a loudish zap or bang. Now all is safe. Dissect freely.
