Bethesda Knew PS3 Skyrim Had Memory Issues, Shipped Anyway

Todd Howard, Director of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, has admitted that Bethesda knew that Playstation 3 owners were going to run into a “bad memory” issue with it’s highly addictive 2011 RPG. Bethesda believed that only a small percentage of Playstation 3 owners would be affected, and went ahead and shipped the game.
Well apparently the massive success of Skyrim turned that “small percentage” into well over 10 million users, who to this day are still struggling with issues on Sony’s console.
Here is what Howard had to say…
“We did a ton more testing this time around, so the game is definitely our most solid release regardless of platform.
The way our dynamic stuff and our scripting works, it’s obvious it gets in situations where it taxes the PS3. And we felt we had a lot of it under control. But for certain users it literally depends on how they play the game, varied over a hundred hours and literally what spells they use, did they go in this building?”
He also revealed that the major problem being the Playstation 3′s handling of large save files was a “misconception”, and that the real issue depends solely on how the player has played the game.
“It’s literally the things you’ve done in what order and what’s running.”
With patch 1.4 Bethesda is hoping that finally after 3 months they now have a handle on things. Bethesda asked users for their saved game files, and used them to sort out the multiple issues Playstation 3 owners have been encountering.
“Now that we’ve been through this we’re not naïve enough to say ‘we have seen everything’, because we have to assume we haven’t. There are still going to be some people who have to come back to us and say, ‘OK, my situation is this.’
‘OK, send us your saved game.’ We literally need to look at what you have running. We tried doing it through e-mail. We need to open the saved game and look at it.
We’ve got one guy who has seven dragons on the other side of the world, and a siege about to happen in this city and another 20 quests running. And, OK, this is what the game is trying to do and it’s having a hard time running that.”
While I’m glad that Bethesda is dedicated to fixing the issues occurring on the Playstation 3 version of Skyrim, it is a little shocking that it took this long to get sorted out. More so that Bethesda let millions of gamers buy a product they knew was faulty. That’s a lot of gamers out there who are going to think hard about another Bethesda purchase. Looks like this generations mentality of release now, patch later has finally spun around and bit a developer in the ass.

sly dicks goty
And that's the realities of capitalism and multiplatform development.
There's literally no point to the PS3. It's the most abnormal to program on, and Epic hired an entire team just for PS3 ports. In addition, developing for 360 is allot like developing for a Windows PC, so much that many 360 games get PC ports (like Mass Effect or Alan Wake).
Also, Blu-Ray, which did nothing for gaming but made the PS3 more expensive (and disc reads far slower than DVD, thus longer load times on PS3 and some games even require mandatory installs).
There's literally no incentive to "unleash the true power of the PS3 :downs:" since you can spend that money on making a PC or Wii or smartphone version instead, and just release a shitty PS3 port (like what most devs do unless Sony pays them).
Honestly why have development cycles been scaled down this much

Hey look, an xbox kiddie.
Oh no, after playing hours in their game it starts to lag and you need to reboot it. They patched it, if they didn't they'd look bad for releasing it to everything else, people would be pissed if they didn't release it. It wasn't game breaking, you just reboot it and you're fine.

I only PC game at this point.
Also, PS3 being hard to develop for is well documented:

That doesn't make it a "waste of time". Everything is worth developing on in some way. It's the only way we can make progress, by seeing what works, and how it compares to others.
Your post was still fanboy shit though and should be purged from existence. It's like you're trying to start an argument on purpose.

This is so utterly moronic that I don't even want to touch it.

Avatar fits.
But really, it's so completely fucking obvious that Bethesda rushed Skyrim out for the 11/11/11 gimmick to increase sales through memorability. Skyrim is hands down the buggiest game I've ever played. And the NavMesh bug is inexcusable, since it's been there since Fallout 3 but Bethesda hasn't bothered to fix it because there's an extremely roundabout solution (which is unsupported by the Workshop) that the modders came up with. Let's not forget how the 4GB patch and SkyBoost (both of which have been integrated into the game via patches) were first made as mods.

Wouldn't that make me a hater? And I said that it's in devs' best interest to release unoptimizaed PS3 ports rather than making it "better version than 360 version omg!!!"

They didn't care about making a decent PS3 port or fixing any bugs because it's not a game with a monthly fee, it's a one-time fee - once someone buys the game, Bethesda has your $60, even if you stop playing a day later (or can't play at all) due to poor quality. And oh! Guess what! INFINITE QUESTS*! BRAND NEW ENGINE**! GOTY ALL YEARS!
I'm so glad the PC version at least allows people to fix Bethesda's mistakes so that the game is actually playable.

I get that a lot.
I didn't have too many problems with bugs on the PC. I am a little disappointed in Bethesda though, reading this.

They bothered fixing the PC version, and bothered making the 360 version good.

Well, no. Firstly because "hater" is a fucking retarded term, and secondly, you don't have to show your alignment to make it clear you despise one system and praise another.
Reading through that CNet article makes the problems look to be on the developers end of things. The PS3 doesn't use the normal PPC, x86 stuff, but Sony provide an API so the developers don't have to deal with that. It doesn't use a normal version of OpenGL, instead it uses one designed for the PS3. The problems they are running into are because their development methods aren't adapted to the hardware and software. Not because the PS3 is harder to develop on "on purpose", but because the programmers aren't used to developing on it.
Shit, Gabe said it was a waste of time all those years ago as the article mentioned. Guess which console has SteamWorks integration? Guess which console actually was worth looking into more in the end? It certainly seems to have been the PS3 for them. Given time and system can become easier to develop for, the PS3 has had time for this to happen.
Doesn't surprise me, though I always thought Bethesda simply didn't understand the concept of QA, now it just seems they do and simply don't give a shit.
I remember back when they cared for the gamer.
Well, no. Firstly because "hater" is a fucking retarded term
Care to elaborate, please?

That's only because MS doesn't allow Steamworks on 360. The Steamworks on PS3 is just to advertise Steam to PS3 players, and hope to get them to buy PC/Mac titles on Steam.
And if you need another developer's input on PS3 development:
http://www.gamesradar.com/force-unleashed-producer-admits-ps3-version-sucks-says-he-likes-360-better/
There's like never ending amounts of stories of devs being frustrated at the PS3. Even notch is making Minecraft on 360, but not PS3 (yet at least).
I don't see the problem to be honest. The game was still playable, and it didn't affect every person that played it. They could have delayed the PS3 version and released it when the problem was fixed, but somehow I get the feeling that Bethesda would have gotten a lot more backlash if they had decided to do that.
Care to elaborate, please?
Maybe it's because people throw it around without knowing what it really means to hate something.

how is that still funny to people i mean holy shit people have been vomiting it all over the forums like an "arrow to the knee" joke
At this point I don't think anything less than a full refund can compensate, although I don't think that's possible.
Playstation 3 is great.
Goodness forbid I pay a fucking monthly fee to play videogames that I have already shelled money for. A multi-purpose $300 PC that plays Bluray and lets me do everything the Xbox can but cheaper, I'm in. It's a matter of preference really.
About Skyrim: isn't this to be expected from Bethesda? This is really shameful
