Liberal NBN spokesman Malcolm Turnbull revealed on Tuesday that the coalition will spend $29.5 billion building its national broadband network, should it win the September federal election. Mr Turnbull forecast download speeds of between 25 and 100 megabits per second (mbps) by late 2016 and between 50 and 100 mbps by 2019. That compares to Labor's plans to spend $44 billion but offer straight-up speeds of 100 mbps. It sparked immediate debate and comparison on websites like Twitter, with the hash tag #NBN trending all day. Some users attacked the lower speeds under the coalition's plan. One user posted: "Eighty per cent of the cost for 25 per cent of the speed. Policy fail. #fraudband #nbn." Another added: "Hey Abbott! Keep these "policies" coming! They're great! Haven't laughed this hard in years! #nbn #fraudband." The hash tag #fraudband was used by a number of the coalition's NBN critics, with some claiming it either wouldn't achieve the long-term forecast speeds or would come in over budget. The opposition did have its supporters online, but they appeared to be firmly in the minority on Twitter on Tuesday. Others were simply happy to be having the debate.
[editline]10th April 2013[/editline] even fuckin kevin's havin a go
Good on them. For one of the first major policies announced this election year abbott has sincerely fucked it up. like the point of the NBN was to firmly put us on the map in terms of internet speeds because we are so behind other western countries. The liberal plan will cost us $30 billion - and achieve something that can probably be achieved by the private sector down the track anyway. The NBN would cost 3 times as much - a considerable amount but at least at the end of the day you can say it actually had an effect. I don't have much faith in the Labour Party, but I can safely say that if this policy is an indication of the liberal party platform over the coming year, I know where my vote is going
"Eighty per cent of the cost for 25 per cent of the speed. Policy fail."
Sums it up nicely, the Coalitions plan is an absolute joke
Yeah, as much as Abbott seems to have a chance of winning, I really don't want him to, I am alright with Julia having another term
I really hope/think that labour wins on policy and it looks like they could the scandals have really damaged their reputation with the media but if they can win on policy, they have a huge huge chance
The media is just really childish when it comes to Labour and shit, with the whole Krudd leadership spill that was on every fucking radio and television channel around the nation it was just stupid mediawatch had a go at all the sportbet radio advertisements and how some breached the code of conduct for commerical radio channels
The media is just childish about everything. They may be attacking Labor more now but while they do have some right leanings, it's far more because they're the incumbents and it's far easier to go along with relentless negativity. The Liberal policies really are a joke though. It's just repealing things, doing half-assed versions of Labor policies and STOP THE BOATS. They had similar complaints early on and claimed we just needed wireless, fortunately in both cases the technology can provide objective numbers and prove how stupid it is.
The Liberals dont know how to internet, Never have, Never will. Also felt this is relevant, Saw it on a anti-tony abbott facebook page.
But of course, Tony abbott doesn't believe in climate change Actually he's just the most idiotic liberal party leader
Vote aussie sex party
The only policy that appeals to me for Labor is their stance on NBN, but I'm still voting for Australian Sex Party anyway.
The Internet has been going wild, over my superhero Tony Abbott.
What the hell? Why are they complaining about 3mb/s MINIMUM?
so this is the reason why my download and upload speed is slow?
What the hell? Why are they complaining about 3mb/s MINIMUM?
In denmark, 10mbit is a fraud if you pay for 20. That's a huge fuss atm. My ISP uses fiber and promises the speed you pay for, otherwise you contact them and they'll fix it. I pay for 40/40, I get 50/50 and heck, one day I had 66mbit upload.
Internet infrastructure still has a long way to go. At my work they just laid down fiber and now they have a 10/10 mbit connection for the entire company. At home I have 100/100 all to myself. University :v:
Got really confused by this before I remembered that in Australia, the Liberal Party are a pile of shit.
all parties are a pile of shit really, we're never satisfied with anything
all parties are a pile of shit really, we're never satisfied with anything
I will agree with this. I just hope we get off our high horse and vote on what we need not on "YOU SMELL BAD".
Telstra would have already laid out fiber if it weren't for the NBN. Both parties are crap, and both made bad choices on the Broadband network. If only labour didn't waste all that fucking money just handing it out to people when Rudd was in to buy voters over, they could have built the network a LOT quicker. And the liberals need to get their fucking shit together, this is the 21st century.
like the point of the NBN was to firmly put us on the map in terms of internet speeds because we are so behind other western countries.
At least your country has plans for nationalizing such high-bandwidth broadband, or broadband at all. The chances of something like that happening here in the U.S. are so abysmally low that I'd have a larger chance of being instantaneously teleported to some random part of the universe. The quickest broadband where I live is about 6MB/s (which I have), and I know a great deal of people that are still stuck with dial up with no hopes of ever getting broadband.
