Defense Secretary James Mattis on Thursday said that there was "very little doubt" Russia has attempted to interfere in democratic elections in the past. "There is very little doubt that they have either interfered or attempted to interfere in number of elections in democracies," Mattis said while answering questions at NATO headquarters in Brussels. He added that he does not feel compelled to respond to Russian officials who were not pleased with his call to deal with Moscow from a position of strength. "I have no need to respond to the Russian statement at all. NATO has always stood for military strength and protection of democracies and the freedoms we intend to pass on to our children," he said. Mattis maintained that Russia needs to "live by international law" and "prove itself" when it comes to its international commitments.
Do you really expect him to say "yeah Russia had a hand in the elections" what? "OH! He just said nothing happened, he tells it like it is" what???? all the evidence is stacked against his point I dunno what your train of thought is
He said there is very little doubt Russia interfered as in he thinks they did. Edit: Right? Getting up at 6am the past week is fucking with me.
The article never has him mentioning the US election, only that Russia has had a hand in the elections of many democracies.
Why would he say it if it wasn't about the recent controversy?
Wonder how long it'll be before he's let go.
A number of people think he's being kept around simply because he is one of the few popular members of his cabinet, and that by getting rid of him it would dramatically tank his support, especially with the military. While it's frankly asinine, there are those who take it to the extreme that by keeping Mattis around Trump is avoiding a coup, or that getting rid of him would inspire one. Asinine, but perhaps wishful thinking for some.
Wonder how long it'll be before he's let go.
that would be fucking nuclear fallout, trump's approval would plummett mattis is hugely popular, he's one of the only members of trump's cabinet with majority approval
That feel when the only sane and competent member of your executive branch goes by the name of "Mad Dog". In all seriousness he's our only hope of not turning everything to shit in my opinion. As many have stated Trump would be committing political suicide if he kicked Mattis out, and with him in he may be the only voice of reason that Trump will listen to.
He does not explicitly say the US elections last year, so take it with a grain of salt. I am sure he believes they did for the US elections, but he is speaking in a way that still backs up the Trump administration's current stance.
but see that little doubt is coming from the man who profited most from that interferance
It's like a broken record. "Russia may have influenced the elections" how can people keep saying this without actual proof. Even if it is true (which it probably is) Americans of all people shouldn't be throwing their arms up in outrage. We literally have a dedicated government agency where their job is to politically influence and destabilize regions and countries

I have very little doubt too that Russia has interfered in the elections of nations like Ukraine that are right on her border. Interfering in the US's election is a completely different matter. The sheer scale of work required to sway the results from the primaries upwards in every (or even the largest) state is just so incredibly far-fetched I find it exceedingly difficult--if not impossible--to lend any credence without evidence. Is there anyone who can corroborate these allegation that isn't wholly dependent on my faith?
Why would he say it if it wasn't about the recent controversy?
He could be referring to Crimea, since that has come up again recently due to the Trumpet.
