Wireless providers would face limits on early termination fees and must unlock phones under "reasonable terms" under new draft guidelines released Monday by Canada's telecommunications regulator. The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission is asking the public for feedback on its draft "wireless code" via an online discussion that will remain open until 5 p.m. Feb. 15, the last day of a public hearing in Gatineau, Que., on the code. The hearing begins on Feb. 11.
http://www.cbc.ca/news/technology/story/2013/01/28/tech-wireless-code-of-conduct-draft-crtc.html
Incredible! I'm happy that something good is finally coming out of the CRTC. This better pass (at least what the article wrote about it)! My contract ended with Robers this month. I am now waiting for Google to stock up on Nexus 4s so that I can move to a more customer 'friendly' service that wont charge out of the ass.
Except for all the problems with internet service in Canada make up for the small lack of bullshit in this facet.
Now please tell our internet monopoly to go fuck itself. Man do we have shit internet
Bought Time We get something in the customers Favour here in Canada. Cellphone contract prices are fucking retarded and they do nothing about any of it. Bad enough a so called Unlimited Data plan (yet throttled to 0.5mbps after 8GG) costs me over 100$, I Should have some freedom over my hardware.
Good. Pretty much everything in that list needs to be implemented ASAP. Telecomms companies dicking over customers needs to STOP.
it need's to stop but it never will untill alot of people start doing something about
Yeah guys, move here for your phones. For the price to buy an unlocked phone with service here, you'd be paying less to buy two phones with your plans.
Good. Pretty much everything in that list needs to be implemented ASAP. Telecomms companies dicking over customers needs to STOP.
I pay 100 bucks a month for a wireless hub because I cant get dsl and get a monthly cap of 20gb. Most of the time I get stuck on the 4g network and the internet is slow as fuck.
Hopefully this is only the first part of telling telecom companies to fuck themselves here. I absolutely despise Bell and Rogers, I wish Harper would take a piece of Garneau's advice and open up our internet market to the world at large, we need large, foreign companies to come in a demolish our duopoly on internet service just to show Bell and Rogers they're no longer going to be allowed to safely fuck every Canadian up the ass for Internet service. Fuck the idea that we need to "protect Canadian business," in the telecom sector, if that business is a shitsucking asshole, then let it go bankrupt for all I care, the country would be a better place.
I'd rather move to the US for their internet services than care about some phone crap fuck the internet up here fucks you in the ASS every time
Incredible! I'm happy that something good is finally coming out of the CRTC. This better pass (at least what the article wrote about it)!
The CRTC is fantastic as a consumer watchdog. They're shit as a regulatory agency though.
I hate the internet here in Canada too, the services are horrible. Don't they have a law here that makes it so there can't be many "competitors for internet" or make it really hard/expensive for new rivals to enter? I heard Bell and Telus(not sure of others) went crazy a while back due to something changing with that. Hopefully we get changes for that too.
Why move to Canada? You can unlock your phone in the Netherlands after your contract expires. You can even ask your provider to do it for you.
i think the title refers to americans i think it'd be a bit easier to go to canada rather than across an ocean
Don't think about the thirst or hunger. Just keep on swimming.
thats nice next step prohibiting bandwith caps because it's pretty sad that companies get away with this shit in 2013
I used to work for a Rogers Wireless, and I must say, this was a good read.
Customers receive a personalized summary of key terms and conditions in their contract, such as how much they would pay in cancellation charges at different times during their contract and what tools are available to help them monitor their usage of different services.
The contract(We don't use this term anymore) specifies there's a $12.50 cancellation fee on top of the remainder of your 'Tab', or the cost of the phone. Pay the tab, and the $12.30, and your 'Tab' is done.
Wireless providers be required to unlock customers' wireless devices under "reasonable terms." Options for those terms include fees and time frames.
Unlocking phones is strictly through tech support. You simply call, they give you the directions, unlock codes, etc all for $50. Gets put on your bill.
Customers be given tools to monitor their usage compared to the limits of their plan in order to be aware of extra fees they might incur if they go above the limits.
This app tracks minutes, data, text messages aswell as Long Distance/Roaming minutes. There are also options to modify your account, and purchase 'Travel Packs' if you were to go abroad.
Customers be allowed to restrict features that could incur additional fees, and the ability to specify a cap to their monthly bill. Once the user hits the cap, the service provider would suspend services that could result in extra fees.
I like this idea. Stop the service before you get charged late fees, etc. As for random fees incurred, you can hold rogers liable under the Ontario's Consumer Protection Act (NOTE: ONTARIO ONLY) and terminate your tab with no cancellation fees.
Early termination fees can only include subsidies on the price of phone or other mobile device and discounts the customer received for signing on to a contract of a specific length.
This has always been the case. The Economic Inducement is never over $420, I believe. Every month of your term, that $420 goes down $15-$20 every month depending on the phone you purchased. For example, my Economic Enducement when I originally got my Samsung Galaxy Note II was $400. That was in November. I still have 33 months remaining. So if I wanted to cancel my contract, or upgrade to a new phone, all I'd have to do is pay the remainder of the balance, which currently is $366.66. Essentially you're just leasing a phone for 3 years. So consumers should get a little more breathing room when it comes to the technical bullshit. And I understand most of this may apply to Ontario Residents only, but hey! The more you know [editline]29th January 2013[/editline]
thats nice next step prohibiting bandwith caps because it's pretty sad that companies get away with this shit in 2013
this is what bothers me the most. I hate only paying for 3GB of data. But right now with the competition in Canada, Customer Service / Quality is in a teeter-totter battle. You can't seem to get both with any company as of yet. Either deal with good service, and capped data, or shitty service (Customer & wireless service) with no cap (which is bullshit because of the Fair use policy)
